Biography

Virginia Beach, United States (2010 – present)

Kunubu is a one-man reggae/ rock project from Virginia Beach, VA formed in the summer of 2010 to make instrumental SoCal-inspired reggae rock, while drawing in influences from styles outside of the typical reggae-rock scene. The name Kunubu is an altered form of the word Qunubu, coming from the same Proto-Indo European root word as Cannabis. Ancient Europeans used qunubu for recreational and ritual use, and viewed it as a sacred plant, not a weed to be despised. Kunubu is best enjoyed with qunubu.

Originally, Kunubu was formed as an outlet to release just one song, “Never”. What started out as just one song then grew into two songs, then four, and eventually eight songs turned into Kunubu’s first cd, Sunrise Sesh, which was completed on 8/7/2010, less than one month after the first song was written and recorded. Around 70 copies were made, 50 containing album art and a track listing. The first 15 were hand-numbered and given away to friends and acquaintances in Chesapeake, VA. The rest were quickly dispersed through Greenville, NC with the help of a local skate shop, head shop, and a small record store.

Green Is Good was written and recorded between September and October, and was released November 5th, 2010. It features four new songs, and has an overall darker vibe than Sunrise Sesh. The final song features a saxophone solo improvised and recorded by Dom G.

Still Burning, the newest EP, was written, recorded, and compiled in December 2010, and released in January 2011. This would be the first Kunubu release to contain keyboard instruments in a song, a small stepping stone towards a more mature sound.
