@buzzmore "Also very similar to the music used at the start of There Will Be Blood". Well spotted, the score for that movie was written by Jonny Greenwood (the guitarist in Radiohead), who is massively influenced by Penderecki. The piece used at the opening is actually one of his orchestral works called Popcorn Superhet Receiver.

This highlights the brilliance of Sebastian's Threnody. And is also obviously chilling in its own right: scary and compelling [2] indeed.

When this started I reached for the Ban button, yet for some reason changed my mind. As it progressed I found it increasingly fascinating, disturbing, scary, and compelling ...

Buzzmore, I am not sure of your question, but the piece was used in the 2006 sci-fi film Children of Men.

I guess we owe it to the civilians who were vaporized on that horrific day to listen to this. The ones who were turned to particle dust were the lucky ones, the true horror was witnessed after the destruction.

sigh... "not meant to be enjoyed ". !.?.!. I enjoy it thoroughly as this track, and this album for that matter, it is a masterpiece. Penderecki is so expressive, and experimental, that it puts him into the realm of avant-garde for me. He has a way of creepifing beautiful instuments to the point of being introspectively mood altering, tracks still amaze me now, decades after their creation.

Fantastic. The only music that actually puts me on the edge of my seat and gives me goosebumps.
