Kristin Hersh (born August 7, 1966 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States) is a prolific American singer-songwriter and a post-punk pioneer who was one of the two lead singers/guitarists in the alternative rock group Throwing Muses (the other was her stepsister Tanya Donelly). She also led the hardcore punk influenced power trio 50 Foot Wave, and has performed and recorded as a solo artist.

Hersh’s music is known for its creative chord chemistry, hypnotic sonic treatments, and a vocal style ranging from softly melodic singing to impassioned screaming. Some of her signature contributions to popular music include addressing the complexities of marriage and motherhood through impressionistic, sometimes hallucinatory lyrics about everyday feelings and varying mental states.

I just downloaded Speedbath at http://kristinhersh.cashmusic.org/speedbath/ and the 50 Foot Wave discography at http://50footwave.cashmusic.org/freemusic/ and I'm totally blown away by the quality and passion of the music -- I've loved her solo stuff and Throwing Muses a long time but this newer stuff is truly amazing.. I'd give anything to see her live.

@mkei: Check out http://kristinhersh.cashmusic.org/ -- especially the "Speedbath" section, it contains a WIP version of her upcoming album. And don't let the WIP thing fool you, it's could easily be released as it is, it's just that the songs are being reworked for the final release. "Speedbath" actually sounds very different from "Your Ghost", but K is a very versatile artist. Oh, and one of her bands, 50FootWave, put their whole discography up for download on CASH Music: http://50footwave.cashmusic.org/

A great example of where steamable tracks would be useful. I heard Your Ghost on a skate vid and loved it, yet I've no idea what anything else of hers sounds like, so I'm not tempted in to buying an album, unfortunately.

Agreed. "Your Ghost" is indeed wonderful, but so's about every song she has written. Kristin is a brilliant musician, and a wonderful person as well. Too bad I never got to see her live -- the joys of living in a country where most musicians can't afford to go.
