Klarisa M. Jovanović is from a family with two nationalities. From her childhood, the blend of two Mediterranean cultures (Istria and Montenegro) one which was close to the Latin West, the other close to the Levant and moving house on many occasions opened a door for Klarisa to a world of varied traditions that lived side by side in the expressly multi-ethnic and multi-cultural state of the former Yugoslavia.

Since her childhood Klarisa M. Jovanović has sung not only Slovenian songs but also some from the southern parts of the former Yugoslavia. She furthered her knowledge of the Mediterranean musical tradition with postgraduate studies in Greece (Thessalonika, Athens), where she focused on Modern Greek language and literature and Greek traditional songs.

She is particularly interested in lesser-known or forgotten traditional songs, which have been preserved in written form. She always leaves her own special personal stamp on the songs she makes her own. For Klarisa, as a reinterpreter of musical heritage, field recordings and written scores are a precious starting point for artistic development.

As well as traditional songs, Klarisa M. Jovanović’s repertoire also includes continuing the troubadour tradition of musically interpreting poetry. Hasret is her sixth CD and is the continuation of a wide-ranged project, which the singer began with Duma Levantina and Pesmi španskih Židov (Songs of the Spanish Jews).
