King Phonon, whose government name isn't known, was born in Soweto, Johannesburg. This music producer's second home is Alexandra Township, Johannesburg. He is a vinyl-sample based producer, and crate digging is what gives his sound a raw and grimy feel, yet his music is soulful and playful.
According to his website, Phonon, he is going to release his debut, First Thing That Comes To Mind, in March 2012. The EP promises to a palpable gritty soulful boom bap sound that is synonymous with hip-hop.
He produced a track called Sugar for 3rd Wave 's Table Manners EP which was released in June 2011.
He got his name from an emcee and friend Word. Kgosi is a seTswana word that means king, and Phonon is a quantum of energy that is associated with a compressional wave of sound or vibration. King Phonon; the king of sound, a viable alias given the nature of his work.
His identity is a closely guarded secret.
