    A Strange Adventure...
Now come and Muse with me awhile about a Journey where we shall seek the Ultimate goal in music!!
We'll search for the talisman of in all it’s glory!!!
We shall Tool ourselves with the mighty Sword of and undertake this Saga with help from the Agents Of Mercy throughout the land of Marillion.
Just East of Eden we shall cross the River Styx, and leaving a very wide Margin of Safety we'll take a rest by
the Stream of Passion in our Wigwam.
We must heed the Fates Warning about the MullMuzzler
because It Bites and we would lose our Focus...
Catching a Rare Bird, we will have it cooked in
the Thieves' Kitchen and served as our breakfast, and drink Gazpacho brought to us by
    The Flower Kings.
Our venture will be aided by a great big Pride of Lions, who hunt fearing nothing, not even loud Explosions in the Sky.
Our Explorers Club will find themselves approaching the Mountain known as Genesis, wherein lives King Crimson. His majesty will give them the antidote to the Porcupine Tree stings they’ll encounter by the Moongarden.
Whilst there Under the Sunlight, our ex-Emperor Stan surprisingly disturbed The Queen Killing Kings with her sword Xang and Rushed to Kamelot for help from The Roswell Six...
No-Man who eats of the Magic Pie found near
the Roger Waters will suffer his Waterloo. By the Riverside, we'll cross using one of the 5Bridges and then engage in one of the Rituals thought up by the Red House Painters until
    Zero Hour arrives!!
The Pain of Salvation shall be eased with The Reasoning that the Dream Theater is only a very short Camel ride away from the Ash Ra Tempel.
Summoning help from the Gentle Giants who with their Hammer of the Gods will lead us to the Laudanum Forest where Pavlov's Dog and Unifauns play.
The Psychic Echo will soon surely dispel The Moody Blues and a Magenta coloured Gong will sound.
How We Live depends entirely on our IQ, but Fleet Foxes will show us where lives the Aching Beauty, who will give us the Seventh Key to Unitopia.
Yes – we finally arrive at the Netherworld where
the Jade Warrior mounts guard on A Perfect Circle within which resides the Grail!!!
  • solipsistic NATION No. 173: Banco de Gaia

    24 Dec 2009, 08:43 by solipsisticast

Today's on solipsistic NATION we're going to close out 2009 with an interview with Toby Marks of Banco de Gaia and hear tracks from his 20 year retrospective album, Memories Dreams Reflections.

I first discovered Banco de Gaia way back in the day when I was first getting into electronic music when I heard Banco de Gaia's El Ahram Mix of "PlayDesert Wind" on the first Excursions in Ambience compilation album. Excursions In Ambience was one of those albums that I listened to over and over again! It featured the Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia, Tranquility Bass and The Future Sound of London as well as Banco de Gaia and had a profound impact on the music I would listen to for years to come so it's pretty cool to have Toby on today's show!

Toby often mixes Arabic and Middle Eastern samples against a bass heavy reggae, rock, or but overall there's a spiritual dimension to his music. At least I think so, and it's been a wonderful ride listening to Toby grow as an artist and expand his musical palette. Memories Dreams Reflections does its best to encapsulate the history Banco de Gaia and I've done my best to select tracks from the album to convey that experience. No surprise, I completely failed, but it was fun to make the effort. There are quite a few live tracks on today's show as well as covers of legendary prog rock groups such as Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Hawkwind. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did.

See you next year! We'll kick off 2010 with a live set from Somatic Responses!

  • Top Albums of 2009 and the Decade!

    24 Dec 2009, 02:57 by BlaizeRaz0r

To start things off I would like to point out that my "true" musical taste, as I call it, didn't start until 2004, so most albums I was into before 2004 I've forgotten. 2004 was the year I was introduced to bands like Opeth, Avenged Sevenfold, and Dimmu Borgir. On top of my new found metal taste I had a huge explosion of progressiveness especially between the years 2006 and 2008 which included bands like Dream Theater, Muse, King Crimson, Anekdoten, Katatonia, The Flower Kings, and Between the Buried and Me. Since 2004 the music I've listened to has influenced me beyond anything else.

I have specific awards that I will also include in this note for those bands and instrumentalists that are best in my opinion in different aspects.

So 2009 was a pretty damn good year for music. Surprisingly, it was not my top favorite bands that put out the best albums but those bands that I still liked a lot but never really considered all time favorites. Without further ado here is my 2009 Top 10!

    Best of 2009

    1. Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect
    2. Katatonia - Night Is The New Day
    3. Lamb of God - Wrath
    4. The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life and Death
    5. Mastodon - Crack The Skye
    6. Obscura - Cosmogenesis
    7. Porcupine Tree - The Incident
    8. The Mars Volta - Octahedron
    9. dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion
    10. Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

During 2009 I was fully exposed to bands like The Mars Volta and dredg who I heard a few songs from before but never realized how good they really were! The best additions to my collection of artists were Mastodon and The Dear Hunter. Mastodon's earlier stuff was kinda hard for me to get into but Crack the Skye, like for many others, has blown me away. Now their post 2009 catalogue is easy and fun to listen to. I "get" them now.

Best new band of the year undoubtedly goes to The Dear Hunter. On the same musical page as The Mars Volta, dredg, and Coheed and Cambria, The Dear Hunter are a band that should be on top of EVERYTHING popular right now. Casey Crescenzo is a fucking genius.

Between the Buried and Me takes the top spot because they progressed out of Colors! I wasn't sure how they'd do it but they did it! The Great Misdirect is definitely not Colors Part 2, and that's exactly how I wanted it to be!

The top three bands that I've come to love a lot ended up more progressive and innovative than even my most anticipated releases by Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, and Muse.

And now for the first Off Beat Award!! The Biggest Disappointment of 2009!!
    The Winner is.....

    Muse - The Resistance

What the hell. How does one of my favorite bands put out the worst album of the year. I mean Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree were still decent, but this album sucked... hard. Come on Matt, you had three years to write something good. Katatonia did it, and they are on their 10th album!! Sadness was to be had. Muse has fallen in my books a little bit.

Ok now we're on to the hard stuff. This is where we dive into the entire decade. But first some more awards!!

The best years in music this decade!!
Runner up is... 2003!! and the winner is......

    2007!

This year was PACKED with new releases from so many bands. Long awaited releases from bands like Type O Negative, Symphony X, and Rush as long as Top Notch releases from bands like Dream Theater, Explosions in the Sky, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree, and BTBAM.

    Best drummers of the decade!!

Martin Lopez, Martin Axenrot, Gavin Harrison, and Blake Richardson! Portnoy would probably be included if LTE and Scenes were 00's releases and not 90's :p

And Now for my decade's Top 20! I made a self rule of only 1 album per band. I did this because there are too many albums that I liked from the same 5 or 6 bands that it wouldn't be fair to many of the newer bands I've discovered over the last few years. And I certainly want to represent them in my list. These ones were both important and favorite. No between talk either. These albums are beyond anymore words other than "BEST"

    Without further ado.

    20. Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place (2005)

    19. Mastodon - Crack The Skye (2009)

    18. Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane (2002)

    17. Meshuggah - obZen (2008)

    16. Protest the Hero - Fortress (2008)

    15. Gojira - The Way Of All Flesh (2008)

    14. Frost* - Milliontown (2006)

    13. BeardFish - Sleeping In Traffic: Part Two (2008)

    12. The Tangent - The Music That Died Alone (2003)

    11. The Flower Kings - Unfold the Future (2002)

The Top Ten Albums Of The Decade

    10. The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life and Death (2009)

    9. Muse - Absolution (2003)

    8. System of a Down - Steal This Album! (2002)

    7. Avenged Sevenfold - Waking The Fallen (2003)

    6. Lamb of God - Sacrament (2006)

    5. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002)

    4. Between the Buried and Me - Colors (2007)

    3. Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance (2006)

    2. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (2007)

And finally... My Number One Album Of The Decade....

    1. Opeth - Blackwater Park (2001)

Opeth is by far my band of the Decade. It was my gateway drug to other metal, prog, and even jazzier dudes. Watershed or Porcupine Tree's "Fear" would have been the number one album if Blackwater Park didn't come out this decade.

    Some last awards!

2008 gets the award for "Deadest musical year but every album that did come out all ended up being masterpieces" lawl

    Runner up albums!
    Oceansize - Frames
    Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Anekdoten - A Time Of Day
    Spock's Beard - V

And my favorite band right now

    Between the Buried and Me!!
-Alaksa, Colors, and The Great Misdirect have all owned me for a while now, and it's safe to say that BTBAM is my favorite band now.

To wrap things up.... I know most of you guys haven't heard all of these albums, but if you ever get the chance to hear any of them I assure you it's worth your while in some way. I live for music, and I hope I end up on some random kid's list in the future. That would be pretty cool.

  • 2009 releases / reissues

    21 Dec 2009, 16:58 by afterfly

This year, I've been listening to loads of different music and discovered a lot of old stuff too. Here's my top 5 of 2009 releases and reissues:

    Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

A very diverse record and probably the one I most listened to this year. Great song progression – love it from start to finish. The quiter, mellow moments just as much as the noisy one's you most likely will never spot on a PT album.

    Devin Townsend Project - Ki

It's the first Townsend album I was listening to and I liked it right from the start. Guess I have to listen to more Townsend records, though I'm not that into heavier metal music. Any suggestions much appreciated.

    No-Man - Mixtaped (2DVD)

Live concert from the 2008 mini-tour (of 3 gigs) on disc one and a career-spanning 90 minute No-Man documentary on disc two. The documentary alone was worth the purchase. Also, I like the appearance of former bandmember Ben Coleman on PlayThings Change. One of the highlights. All in one, recommended for every No-Man fan.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (2009 Remaster)

One of the first 3 reissues (Court, Lizard, Red) remastered as part of the King Crimson 40th Anniversary Series, with bonus material and the album remixed in 5.1 Surround. A classic record.

    Soulsavers - Broken

I love the mixture of rock and gospel music on this one. Along with, amongst others, Mark Lanegan's vocals and the beautiful string arrangements, for me, it flows extremely well.

Other appreciated, very good records include The Long Lost's s/t, Porcupine Tree's The Incident, Bass Communion's Loss (2009 picture disc reissue), and Prefab Sprout's Let's Change The World With Music. Favourite live concerts were Mono, dälek, and Porcupine Tree.

If you have any other good records to share that I might like and have missed, feel free to post them.
  • Call your top 30 crap

    21 Dec 2009, 05:35 by uglybastard

I know doing journals like this are old and I’ve already done a journal like this before I reset my tracks 2 years ago, but I couldn’t resist. This was also for fun.....

    30. currently a 3-way tie, but I’ll go ahead and bash all of the bands that are #30….. I guess I should rename this as “call your top 32 crap”…. No screw it.

a.) CAKE- I just don’t like their cover of “PlayWar Pigs.”

b.) Devo- This band will always be known as an 80’s one-hit wonder,
    sadly.

c.) Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is far from their best album.

    29. Jethro Tull- They were proof of how crooked the Grammy’s were. (Note: I’m not even a big Metallica fan)

    28. Billy Joel- Compared to the music he made when he was in Attila, his music has no balls whatsoever.

    27. Alice in Chains- Black Gives Away To Blue is their worst album (but it’s still decent). Yeah, other than Layne (RIP) overdosing, I can’t really bash this band.

    26. Tegan and Sara- I feel like a lesbian every time I listen to their music. Not that I’m saying it’s bad to be one but you know…

    25. Bauhaus- Perhaps one of the first “serious” bands that made laugh uncontrollably because of the vocals.

    24. Fantômas- Make a new album already!

    23. Electric Wizard- They wish they were Black Sabbath.

    22. The Flaming Lips- I can never get high enough to fall in love with their songs.

    21. King Crimson- Some of their songs can put me to sleep, especially Moonchild.

    20. Judas Priest- They’ve made nothing better after Painkiller, excluding Turbo and Ram It Down which were just corny albums to me.

    19. Blitzen Trapper- I’m surprised they haven’t covered “PlayJackie Blue” by Ozark Mountain Daredevils (who they wish they were, along with Wilco) yet. Also, I expect to hear some of their songs in a generic teen drama movie really soon.

    18. Pixies- They still have made nothing better after Doolittle.

    17. The Rolling Stones- I know it’s been said for years now but who knew that a legendary band would turn into an overpriced mummy exhibit?

    16. The Jesus and Mary Chain- Psychocandy has to be the most overrated shoegazing album ever, next to an album I’ll get to in a moment when I reach My Bloody Valentine.

    15. The Velvet Underground- Again, Squeeze sucked hard and it’s damn good thing that the original members (especially John Cale and Lou Reed) weren’t part of it.

    14. Weezer- Man was Raditude abysmal…

    13. Boris- I missed these guys when they opened for Nine Inch Nails. Damn it! :C

    12. Dead Kennedys- Let’s face it, Jello Biafra was the back bone of this band. It was a smart idea to break up in 2008 because I don’t anybody was seeing through the remaining member’s bullshit.

    11. Queens of the Stone Age- Way to be homophobic, Josh. Although that emo(?) douche had it coming, not the remarks but that bottle that was thrown back at him.

    10. My Bloody Valentine- Isn’t Anything > Loveless (the album I was talking about in #16). Also I felt this band would’ve kicked even more ass if Dave Conway (the original vocalist) was still with them.

    9. Melvins- When I saw them at The Conservatory (not at The Diamond Ballroom), I felt they didn’t play long enough. (even though they did play 2 full sets and still kicked ass). Also, I acted like a shy, starstruck retard when I actually bought a shirt from King Buzzo himself. I can’t really bash these guys either.

    8. Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation is still far from their best album. Also, “Teenage Riot” = The “PlayFreebird” of this band. (classic song though)

    7. Black Sabbath- Although I’ve said Tony Iommi carried Ozzy Osbourne’s ass along with Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, after Dio left they’ve made subpar albums ever since.

    6. The Smashing Pumpkins- Zeitgeist was their version of St. Anger.

    5. The Beatles- Perhaps the most over-whored band of 2009. no wait, ever.

    4. Modest Mouse- I’ve already said this but, ever since Good News for People Who Love Bad News, they’ve made inferior songs/albums compared to the songs/albums before.

    3. Pink Floyd- Just like King Crimson, some of their songs put me to sleep. Also they’ve made better albums than The Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, which songs from those albums (most of the time anyway) are overplayed on Classic Rock radio stations.

    2. The Brian Jonestown Massacre- This band will probably be only known for that lulzy on-stage fight at the Viper Room, after being shown on shows like “World’s Dumbest.”

    1. Bob Dylan- Simply put, his vocals can get annoying if not unintentionally hilarious.
  • Top bands this year

    19 Dec 2009, 11:39 by steevc

I see from my charts that I've been listening to lots of David Bowie, Eels and King Crimson this year. I've not bought a huge amount of music, but have bought a couple of download albums such as Embryonic and Echo. This may be the start of a trend. I'll buy downloads if the price is right and the quality is good. I'm running out of shelf space for CDs.

    13 Dec 2009, 23:34 by VelBG

    10.Gazpacho– Night (2007)

    9. Brett Anderson – Wilderness (2008)

Всеки е чувал Suede. Beautiful Ones, Trash, The Drowners... Scott Walker.

8.King Crimson – The Power to Believe (2004)

She carries me through days of apathy.
    She watches over me.
She saved my life - in a manner of speaking -
    When she gave me back
    The power to believe.

The Power to Believe In the Court of the Crimson King през 1969.

    7.Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet (2007)

Fear of a Blank Planet – най-концентрираният албум на групата в тяхната кариера.

    6.Arcade Fire – Funeral (2004)

5.The Divine Comedy– Absent Friends (2004)

„Ellegance against ignorance, difference against indifference, wit against shit!”, Scott Walker.

4.Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – No More Shall We Part (2001)

Това не е гневният Ник Кейв, сипейки шумна злъч във From Her to Eternity и Your Funeral, My Trial.

    3.Goldfrapp – Felt Mountain (2000)

Utopia.

    2.Sigur Ros - ( ) (2002)

    1.Radiohead – Kid A (2000)

  • Best of 2009 List

    12 Dec 2009, 06:47 by rknight64_

    1. Blut aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With The Stars.
Blut Aus Nord seem to change their musical direction with each album release without losing their signature sound. The biggest change on this album is the melodic touch, which was absent on previous albums such as MoRT or Odonist – The Destruction of Reason by Illumination. The use clean guitar in some of the interludes is a great addition to their sound. I’m sure this album will be on a lot of ‘best of 2009’ lists.

    2. El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Cryptomnesia.
Fans of the Mars Volta should enjoy this release… and rightly so, because half of the members are shared with El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Apparently the other half are members of Hella; a band that I’ve never heard of before, but will probably check out in the future. All of the instruments are played with a high degree of proficiency, as you would expect on any Omar release - just listen to the drums on ‘Shake is for 8th Graders’ and you’ll see what I mean. The thing I like about all Omar Rodriguez-Lopez releases is that the separate instruments have this improvisational quality, but integrate well with one another. The album is a great fusion of progressive/psychedelic rock with Latin and jazz influences. The only thing which might put off people this release is Cedric’s high pitched vocals, which are an acquired taste.

    3. Njiqahdda - Taegnuub - Ishnji Angma.
For those who haven’t heard of Njiqahdda before, they produce a strange mixture of black metal, ambient and psychedelic music. Njiqahdda have a knack for writing good riffs, repeating them and then simply adding layers to the mix. It's hard to believe that Njiqahdda and their side projects, Oaks of Bethel and Funeral Eclipse, have recorded 18 or so releases this year. So far I’ve only been able to get my hands on ‘Taegnuub –Ishnji Angma’, ‘Yrg Alms’ and Oaks of Bethel - The Folk and the Ground. If the back catalogue is anything to go by, I’m sure the 15 other releases of 2009 will be of a high quality. The only reason this doesn’t get a higher position is that the transition between the black metal and ambient based tracks doesn’t feel very fluent. If you haven’t heard Njiqahdda before, check out this release or Njimajikal Arts.

    4. Njiqahdda - Yrg Alms.
I wasn’t really sure what order to put Taegnuub – Ishnji Angma and Yrg Alms. My only (minor) problem with Taegnuub was that the album didn’t flow as well as it could have. Yrg Alms actually has much smoother transitions between the songs. It’s also a bit more progressive and has slightly better production than some previous releases. However, I still think that the individual songs on Taegnuub were marginally better.

    5. Deepspace - World Ocean Atlas.
I only discovered Deepspace about 6 months ago and since then I’ve been listening to his music almost constantly. The music is a type of drone based ambient; no beats, pretty minimal. This album is good to listen to on walks, during study, or if you just want to relax. According to Mirko (the man behind Deepspace) “this album works on the idea of obscure desolate places created by your imagination, and the idea of an atlas comprised purely of maps of oceans”. That statement sums up the album pretty well. On a side note, half of music (including this entire album) is available for free download on last.fm.

    6. Atlas Sound - Logos.
Atlas Sound is the solo project of Bradford Cox of Deerhunter. I have only been able to play this record a couple of times because I only got it recently. Despite this, it’s pretty easy to recognize that this album kicks ass. If you like shoegaze or dream pop then this is probably up your alley. If you want to check out Deerhunter, listen to Weird Era Cont.

    7. Moby - Wait For Me (Deluxe Edition).
If you’re thinking of getting this album, make sure you get the deluxe edition. The bonus CD contains ambient reinterpretations of the 1st CD, which are great for a night in. I’m not usually a huge fan of Moby’s radio-friendly songs (ie. bodyrock etc.), but he is really good at making downtempo electronic music, which makes up the majority of this album. I still haven’t listened to this album heaps because it only came out in November, but it grows on me each time. However, Moby’s best album is still Hotel: Ambient, which also happens to be a bonus CD.

    8. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Phoenix play some very catchy ‘indie rock’ (I think it’s called post-punk revival but don’t quote me on that) type music with a strong electronic presence. It’s pretty poppy, but don’t let that put you off. It’s good backing music for summer evenings or parties.

    9. Midnight Odyssey - Firmament.
I’m impressed with this release because a) it’s Australian b) black metal and c) really good. This album has a strong Burzum influence, with atmospheric keyboards overlaying simple guitar riffs. Most of the songs are mid-paced, with no blast-beats. The guitar work is quite melodic and catchy, without sounding cheesy - to a degree reminiscent of ColdWorld. It’s also worth checking out their demo, The Forest Mourners.

    10. Sybreed - The Pulse of Awakening.
Sybreed are quite possibly the best Industrial Metal band going round. They have managed to make an album that is both heavier and poppier than Slave Design and Antares. The production on this album is about as clean as it gets. For example, check the blastbeats at the start of ‘I am Ultraviolence’. The vocalist, Ben, sounds kind of like Gary Numan when he’s singing, and has a distinctive high pitched growl which works well. The guitars and base have a heavy groove going on and you can expect a lot of machinegun-esuqe riffs (similar to Fear Factory… but better). The heavy use of spacey keyboards and electronics also add a nice touch to the album.

    11. Nile - Those Whom The Gods Detest.
I haven’t listened to a whole lot of death metal this year, but this album stands out because it is brutal as fuck and has some great vocals. After hearing this album I’m considering checking them out live in May. One of my favorites off the album is 4th Arra of Dagon (ARRA ARRA ARRA DAGON DAGON DAGON – check the shoutbox for the song), which I reckon will go off live. If you like the Egyptian influenced interludes you should check out Karl Sanders solo material, which is equally impressive.

    12.Porcupine Tree - The Incident.
Porcupine Tree always deliver solid releases, and The Incident is no different. It’s good modern progressive rock with a touch of metal here and there, particularly towards the end of the album. From reading the Porcupine Tree shoutbox, there seems to be differing views on the album, particularly because of the song ‘Drawing the line’ which has a very poppy chorus. I personally think it’s the best song of the album.

    13. Panopticon - Collapse.
This band has one of the worst tags I have ever seen – Red and Anarchist Black Metal. Probably the only worse tag is Wooden metal (self proclaimed by Varghkoghargasmal). Imagine what black metal would sound like if it was played by John Butler… I guess that’s kind of this album sounds like. The interludes are pretty much bluegrass, which is a good change. My only problem with this album is that the drums are a bit high in the mix.

    14. Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow.
Anaal Nathrakh play a mix of black metal and grind, which is insanely heavy. At the start of their career they were strongly influenced by bands such as Mayhem, but over the last four albums they have steadily improved their production. This is probably their weakest album, mainly because I’m not a huge fan of the slight metalcore influences. However, it’s still heavier than 99% of releases and shits over most other bands. I would recommend Eschanton or Hell is Empty, and all the Devils are here over this.

    15. The Temper Trap - Conditions.
Conditions is a collection of very catchy rock/pop songs. It kind of sounds like Eskimo Joe with the Beegees singing over it (yes some of the vocals are falsetto). My personal favorites off the album are love lost and fader.

    16. Old Man's Child - Slaves Of The World.
    - Why doesn’t Galder just quit Dimmu Borgir and just focus on Old Man’s Child? The albums are consistently better than Dimmu Borgir. If you liked Vermin then you will also enjoy Slaves of the World.

    17. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion.

    18. The Ruins of Beverast - Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite.
    - Alexander von Meilenwald gets bonus points for the great album title. The funeral doom influences have been bumped up a notch and the production is significantly improved.

    19. Drudkh - Microcosmos.
    - One of the better Drudkh releases in recent times. I would still recommend checking out Autumn Aurora first which I personally think is one of the best black metal albums out there.

    20. Faunts - Feel.Love.Thinking.Of..
    - Faunts have a nice mixture of Dream pop, post rock and shoegaze going on. This is their weakest album, but still quite good. Do yourself a favour and check out High Expectations/Low Results.

    21. Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings.
    - One of the weaker Dream Theater releases. Wither is a terrible ballad, which has to be one of the worst songs they have made (and I like many of their previous ballads – ie. the spirit carries on). On the up side, they have also made one of their best songs, The Count of Tuscany. This album would probably be rated higher, but I have high expectations for Dream Theater releases. On a side note, I saw them live (only $59!), and they did a great show with an impressive set-list.

    22. Hellveto - Od Poludnia na Pólnoc....
    - This is a good album, but Hellveto have released nearly 20 albums which sounds pretty much the same. L.O.N. needs to try something new.

    23. Nazxul - Iconoclast.
    - I had been waiting for this album for quite some time. After hearing the Black Seed EP a couple of years ago I was hooked on Nazxul. Iconoclast sounds a bit like Emperor at times, because of the epic/atmospheric keyboards. A good introduction to the album would be Oath (Fides Resurrectio).

    24. Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez - Megaritual.
    - Pretty similar to most Omar albums. I would have included his other albums in this list, but I thought it might get a bit boring.

    25. Gigantic Brain - World.
    - This album is a bit different. I didn’t realize that ambient music could be mixed with grind. Somehow, this works quite well, despite some awkward transitions between the songs.

    26. Shining - VI - Klagopsalmer.
    - Fullständigt Jävla Död Inuti is a great song; a lot heavier and more technical than previous work.

    27. Hellveto - Kry.
    - Sounds exactly the same as Od Poludnia na Pólnoc... but runs for 30 minutes.

    28. Muse - The Resistance.
    - Their weakest album, but some good songs in there. I like the exogenesis symphony and MK Ultra.

    29. Yusuf (ie. Cat Stevens) - Roadsinger (To Warm You Through the Night.
    - Good folky songs, but doesn’t have those classic songs which were typically of his ‘Cat Stevens’ era.

    30. The Mars Volta - Octahedron.
    - The Mars Volta have slowed down the tempo a bit, which is an interesting experiment, but I think they are best when they play the faster style improv-esque songs. Cotopaxi is my pick of the album.

Albums I never got around to listening to / Special mentions:

Gorgoroth – Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt

¡M.G.R. y Destructo Swarmbots! – Amigos de la Guitarra

Hypocrisy – A Taste of Extreme Divinity

Isis – Wavering Radiant: I never got round to listening to this, but I hear that it is very good)

Elysian Blaze – Blood Geometry: This album will surely get released soon. I predicted that this would be one of the better albums of 2009, but it looks as though it will have to wait until 2010.

Transatlantic – The Whirlwind: Word is that this album is very good.

Tim Hecker – An Imaginary Country: A good ambient/glitch artist. Didn’t get round to this album.

Alice in Chains – Black gives way to blue

    Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Rê

Music prior to 2009 that I got into this year:
    - Prog rock: A lot of great music was made during the 70’s. Check out bands such as Camel, Aphrodites Child, Goblin and King Crimson.
    - Shoegaze: Working for a Nuclear Free City, Deerhunter, Phaser, SIANspheric.

What to look out for in 2010:
    - Varg Vikernes (Burzum) has finally been released from jail and will be releasing Belus around March/April.
    - Working for a Nuclear Free City are releasing Jojo Burger Tempest
    - Radiohead - TBA
    - Oceansize - New album in March
