Daby Balde - Introducing Daby Balde (2005)

I found this one at my local library and picked it up on the promise on the cover: "Senegalese Star on the Rise". See, those messages do work. Anyway, given my feelings on the other artists I know from Senegal (Youssou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, Kiné Lam, Ismaël Lô), it seemed a good bet for the price... Not that any country has a monopoly on quality, but that's neither here nor there.

Balde presents a nice set of tunes basically involving his voice and acoustic guitar, with some female backing vocals, percussion, and minimal other instruments. I'd compare this mostly to the early acoustic stuff by Baaba Maal, like Djam Leelii. There is also a bit of similarity to Ali Farka Toure's acoustic "blues-flavored" work. Balde comes from a different cultural background than any of the other well-known Senegalese artists, and infuses diverse African styles into his music.

He has a very pleasant voice…
