    1. What are you listening to right now?
Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town

    2. What song makes you sad?
Lots of them :p Three random ones include Billy Joel - This Is The Time, Carole King - Now And Forever, Cat Stevens - Father And Son

    3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
Black Eyed Peas - My Humps

    4. Your all time favorite band?
I have to pick one? Fine. U2

    5. Your newly discovered band is?
I haven't really discovered anything new recently. I did buy an album by The Kinks because I had liked a few of their songs, and I was happy with the others.

    6. Best female voice?
Kelly Clarkson. But really, I like Alanis Morrissette's voice.

    7. Best male voice?
Say what you want, I think that young Bono was the best.

    8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?
Rock. I guess. I don't know how to classify it.

Depends. Sometimes a fun song, like Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone. It really depends on the situation
  • Another last.fm Survey

Here's another survey that's been floating around for a while, and I had some time on my hands, so I thought I would go ahead and do it. I'm working on a real journal entry to post pretty soon, and I should be doing some more reviews for PounceOnline here at EIU. I might even do a piece about last.fm. Get the word out.

This survey is lengthy. Bear with me because I have great answers and great taste in music I think. ENJOY!

    1. What are you listening to right now?
"One Ray of Sunlight" - Phantom Planet

    2. What song makes you sad?
    "Hurt" - Johnny Cash
This song is just so emotional, and the first time I heard it was for a tribute to someone who had just died. I actually let loose with a few tears, and this was in a group of buddies.

    3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
    "Hollaback Girl" - Gwen Stefani
"Don't Cha" - Pussy Cat Dolls
These songs just blow. Enough said.

    4. Your all-time favorite band?

  • My Grammy Highlights

    9 Feb 2006, 21:32 by josta59

I rarely watch the Grammys, but I decided to last night, and while I don't appreciate the way they're run, it was quite an entertaining show. I missed the Madonna/Gorillaz mash-up, which was too bad. Paul McCartney performed "Helter Skelter" in his first-ever Grammys performance, and Sly and the Family Stone made a comeback appearance! So it was definitely worth watching.

I was rooting for Arcade Fire for "Best Alternative Music Album", but The White Stripes beat them as well as Franz Ferdinand, Beck and Death Cab for Cutie (this wasn't shown on TV). Stevie Wonder beat McCartney and others for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance", and Burt Bacharach won "Best Pop Instrumental Album" (also not shown). Others that weren't shown: Gorillaz/De La Soul took home "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" ahead of Herbie Hancock/Christina Aguilera (huh?), Foo Fighters/Norah Jones (HUH???), Stevie Wonder/india.
  • A music survey with some actual content.

    6 Feb 2006, 08:29 by em--dash

Note: I deleted some questions I didn't feel like answering, so if you want to copy this survey you probably won't want to do it from me -- sorry! :/

    1. What are you listening to right now?
Nothing; the last thing I Scrobbled was a few tracks by The Darkness because my roomie was unfamiliar. The last thing I listened to was my roomie's short playlist of the theme from Brokeback Mountain, two songs off the soundtrack he can stand, and Hallelujah over and over and over! How can people stand that kind of repetition? Honestly.

    2. What song makes you sad?
Three big ones lately -- The Trapeze Swinger, Diamonds And Rust, and Monochrome. Such a sense of lost possibility in all of them that just kills me.

    3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
How Bizarre, most definitely. I get very pissed when I hear it.

    4. Your all time favorite band?
There are two that will forever stand above all others for me: The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. Bob Dylan is rapidly approaching this lofty status.

Speaking as one of those people who is officially "in a relationship," I wonder how much the music I listen to either affects my emotions for my boyfriend or affects how I relate to him at certain times.

First of all, listening to a song like Death Cab for Cutie's "Soul Meets Body," which relates somewhat well to our relationship, makes me have positive feelings about both the song and my life. I am a romantic at my core, and lots of DCFC lyrics are meaningful to me.

But a song like Weezer's "Across the Sea" has negative associations for me from a past relationship, and also has the affect of reminding me of my current boyfriend's former girlfriend. Blech.

Near the beginning of my relationship, I was listening to some angry-girl music like Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," and an Avril Lavigne song, and my good old standby, Ani DiFranco. But I realized that was making me feel somewhat hostile and not very loving/giving toward my guy.

I'm hardly a music elitist, but I definitely can get a bit high-and-mighty about my tastes at times. My all-time favorite band is definitely The Pixies, and my tastes do tend to coincide with hipster critic sets like Pitchfork Media &c.

But like I said, I'm no music elitist. I still jam to what I call my guilty pleasures. Most notably, Kelly Clarkson has been playing on my ipod a lot lately. Say what you will, my darling indie kid bretheren, Since U Been Gone is an awesome song.

Another great song by an artist I'm somewhat ashamed to like is Senorita. It's simply a great dance-R&B song and, despite the fact that he was in NSYNC, Justin Timberlake really does have a good voice.

Finally, I have to admit that even though I make fun of Pete Wentz on a regular basis, I really do like the song Grand Theft Autumn. The acoustic version is particularly good.

Uh, Fall Out Boy still sucks though.

Alright, now that I've got that off my chest…

So 2006 has already been a great year for me music wise. I've started listening to so much new stuff and honestly think i've bought about 20 albums this month alone (which really isn't good for my bank balance).

I'm so annoyed though because 3 of the bands i've started listening to and would love to see live have either already been here or their gig here is sold out already. The three artists being Nada Surf, Fall Out Boy & Death Cab for Cutie.

So going from artists who have been or are coming here but i can't see to artists i don't think i'll ever get to see live cos they're all American and don't come over here like Ingram Hill, Michael Tolcher, Matt Wertz, Will Hoge, Kyle Riabko & Tegan and Sara.

Saying that though i didn't think i'd ever get to see Jason Mraz live and i shall be seeing him twice soon. First time in exactly two weeks which i'm really looking forward to but he's supporting James Blunt so i'm not sure exactly how long Jason will be on for. Most looking forward to his own gig on March 6th!!
