Kekik is a band formed in Istanbul by Enis Gümüs, Tolga Özüdogru, Bora Okumusoglu, and Cem Karaoguz in February 2002. Although the band was founded while they were in university, the guitarists Enis and Tolga were playing some similar music back in high school. The band had no name for over a year, until they realised that they needed one, since they were ggoing to play at the Istanbul Technical University Rock Festival. Ten days before that concert, they decided to name the band Kekik, which means “thyme” in Turkish.

The band mostly plays their own compositions as well as some Turkish folkloric tunes like “zeybek”s with a somewhat unique approach. According to the members, Kekik is performing folkloric progressive rock music. The band likes to improvise very often, and most of their songs never sound the same twice. Recently Kekik decided to play more improvisational songs.

Kekik recorded seven of their songs in 2005. They made a demo album with these recordings, but they didn’t release it.
