It is so sad to me. I love "Call Off the Search", "Piece by Piece" and "Pictures". "The House" was okay for me, but than...what happened?! "Secret Symphony" and "Ketevan" are boring, if you ask me, but "In Winter" is so draggy and uninteresting that I can't find words for it. I like the choir and the language, but the rest...OMG. Perfect music to go slepping. I'm sorry, but it is just my opinion.
I actually enjoy listening to her latest album while falling asleep, ahah! But it's funny you should say that, because, to me, "In Winter" sounds just like a second part of "Call off the Search" (which I also love to listen to while falling asleep). It uses a similar formula, songs are again just simple melodies, like they were on her debut album. In my book, she hasn't done a bad album, so far (including the odd "The House").
Honestly "Call off the Search" is my least favourite Katie album, I almost never listen to it, and I'm glad she changed since then. "The House" and "Ketevan" are pretty great for me, and "In Winter" is great for its purpose, to listen and relax with a cup of tea. Love the original songs on it, the cover of River, and the choir in general. Idk maybe I'm hearing it all wrong, but COTS sounds way less interesting to me :)
I don't hear that much pop on "The House". If anything, she stepped out of her comfort zone and reminded me most of Kate Bush and the like, which is why I think that album is her best achievement. Would love more music like that from her in the future!
How can you not hear that much pop on "The House"? You even have songs in there to tap your foot along to or, if you're feeling bodacious, headbang to while shaking your butt (if you can accomplish such a thing). It was produced by William Orbit, a well known electronic artist! If you truly want more Katie Melua from "The House", then I'm afraid you're listening to the wrong artist. "The House" was a fun experiment, but it doesn't depict Katie's sound signature, at all.
I meant the Taylor/Rihanna/Beyonce pop you mentioned. The House was my first Katie album and, even though I like the others, that one is so special in her catalogue. Just shows what she's capable of when she collabs with new, fresh people and has more imput in the songs. I think she did have a bit of her signature thing going on there, just upgraded it. Not to mention that half of the songs are still same old Katie. You're making it out to be this dance pop album that has no traces of her old sound at all, which is not true. The songwriting is brilliant as well. But I guess if your favourite album is COTS and mine is House, there's really not much to agree on. :) At least we both liked In Winter.
What A talent to the world. I have just found The House & love it. All great, but the Flood & A Happy Place & A moment of madness are the best. over 400 scrobbles in a short space of time. I love it. Thanks Ms Melua.
