Welsh tradition says that, the old harpist Dafydd of Y Garreg Wen,on his deathbed, called for his beloved harp one last time. He played this sad air and asked for it to be played at his funeral. We know that this piece is at least 225 years old,as it was first published in 1784, in Relicks Of The Welsh Bards. The farm, Y Garreg Wen (White Rock), is near to Porthmadog, Gwynedd.
\"Cariwch\", medd Dafydd, \" fy nhelyn i mi,
Ceisiaf cyn marw, roi ton arni hi.
Codwch fy nwylaw i gyrhaedd y tant
Duw a'ch bendithio, fy ngweddw a'm plant!\"
