I remember it was that Wednesday
Oh, when it rained and it rained
They traipsed mud all over the house
It took hours and hours to scrub it out

One of her heaviest songs. I always stand in awe at people laughing at the washing machine part.

I didn't think of that at all, to me it's about loneliness and memory and how objects can remind you intensely of people and situations.

It's an intensely emotional song. All that washing - think Lady Macbeth and the possibilities are endless.

She takes mundane domesticity and makes it beautiful, like the great artist she is.

This song is so misunderstood. Who says the washing machine she's singing about is the regular household appliance you'd expect and not Mrs. Bartolozzi herself...?

I find no faults with this song. It's perfect. ♥

Was just reading this in an interview and remembered some comments about the out of tune vocals on this song... Kate: "I don't believe in perfection. For instance in 'Mrs Bartolozzi' the voice plays with the piano. There's a part I really hate. But as part of the whole song, I couldn't get the same emotional quality on the other takes. This version is a bit out of tune, I don't pronounce the words the way I wished but the emotion I was looking for is there." Somehow I think it actually adds to the song, perfect to me!
