  • The Ultimate Guide To Katatonia’s Music – For long-time fans and newcomers alike

    27 Sep 2007, 12:09 by idavoll

    Introduction to Katatonia’s music
Those that are familiar with Katatonia’s music will know that their music has evolved considerably since their original Death/Doom Metal style begun on their first real demo, Jhva Elohim Meth, in 1992. Nowadays, Katatonia has a much less underground style and has changed into an band. Some people only like this new style, while others look at it with distain and are devout fans of the band’s early sound. There are also those such as myself, who find something special in Katatonia’s music and love their entire career.

    Aim of this article
The aim of this article is to give people a proper perspective on Katatonia’s career and perhaps to get them to try listening to other styles of the band, which they might have disregarded previously. It is also my hope that through this guide, new listeners will be able to identify the style(s) that they may enjoy and can begin their discovery of Katatonia’s music from there. …
  • Surging up my charts at the moment

    30 Jan 2006, 14:12 by TheIronMan

    ...is Katatonia.

I've had a couple of their albums for quite a while but the love for their music struck me only recently. This perhaps was because of a slight prejudice against anything to do with Mikael Akerfeldt considering how much I detest Opeth. But someone forced me to listen to the album Brave Murder Day and that perhaps began a new phase in my taste in metal. Since then I have heard all the Katatonia albums but Brave Murder Day is still my favourite.

Listening to it is a cathartic out of this world experience. It's not just a matter of listening to the album. It is as if one is embarking on an intriguing and mystifying yet exceedingly beautiful journey. One cannot just listen to the album. One has to feel it. One has to live it. This is what IMO Opeth tried and failed to achieve in their music. Katatonia at the moment is my favourite band and I now listen to Brave Murder Day at least once everyday. Other albums I may have worn out through excessive listening but this will never happen with Katatonia.
