Kanye Omari West (born June 8, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia) is a Grammy award winning rapper, producer, author, designer and singer. He began making beats and rapping in the early 90s when he formed the rap group GO GETTERS with Chicago natives GLC and Really Doe, and then gained nationwide popularity when he moved to New York and began producing tracks for artists such as Jay-Z, Twista, Mase, Talib Kweli and Alicia Keys. In 2004, after being pushed aside by many record companies as they felt he wasn’t a marketable hip hop artist, he managed to release his debut solo album, The College Dropout on Roc-A-Fella Records. It went on to receive critical acclaim, and defined the style for which West would become known, including wordplay and the heavy sampling of old soul and R&B tracks from the 70s. He has since released three more albums, all of which (his fourth to a lesser extent) have received numerous awards, high commercial success and critical acclaim. His second album, Late Registration, was released in 2005, his third, Graduation, was released in 2007 and his current album, 808s & Heartbreak, was released in 2008. He is noted for his politically-charged rhymes and controversial behavior both inside and outside the realms of music. West was born in Atlanta, Georgia where he lived with both of his parents. When he was three years old (as mentioned in “Hey Mama”) his parents divorced, and he and his mother moved to Chicago, Illinois. His father was Ray West, a former Black Panther who was one of the first black photojournalists at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and is now a Christian counselor. Kanye’s late mother, Dr.
