Biography

Japan (1998 – present)

Akiko Yoshida is a Japanese // , who performs under the stage name Kokia (stylised as KOKIA, an anagram of Akiko), and sings with a wide radius of musical influences.

She is best known for her songs “Arigatō…” (Thank You?) (which reached #1 in Hong Kong when it was covered by Sammi Cheng) and “The Power of Smile. ” She is also recognised for her numerous contributions to anime/game soundtracks, the most notable being “Ai no Melody/Chōwa Oto (With Reflection)” for the film Origin: Spirits of the Past, “Follow the Nightingale” for the game Tales of Innocence and “Tatta Hitotsu no Omoi” for the anime Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino.

Kokia often performs in Europe, basing her activities in Paris and releasing music through Wasabi Records, a subsidiary of Kazé.

Early life, Pony Canyon debut

Kokia was born on July 22, 1976, and raised by her mother. She started playing the violin when she was two and a half years old, but preferred the family piano. Often instead of playing with toys, Kokia played with the family piano. Kokia remembers putting picture books on the music stand and creating music that represented the scenes.

When Kokia was 10, she went abroad to America with her sister Kyoko to study at the Summer music school (and did so again when she was 14). In high school, she studied in vocal music and opera, later majoring in opera at the Toho Gakuen School of Music.

Concerning Harmonie: the movie is scheduled to have a separate blu-ray/DVD release on November 28. First edition will come with a captionless version of the ending and a booklet including the lyrics and part of the musical score, but still no complete version of the song mentioned... There aren't many singers that sing with such purity and sincerity. An angel, that's what she is.

Thank you for the info as well, mizumichan. On other hand, I fell in love with Hito no Naka ni Aru Mono so much that I kept hoping for her to create many other pieces of fantasy like that again.

@mizumichan: Aww, that's quite a shame. It's a really nice song though! Thank you for the info btw, much appreciated.

@guixiens: Any time! Sadly, it seems there's still no soundtrack or single announced with the song for Harmonie. I can only find information about the Blu-Ray release back in March, but so far no additional material has come out, and it doesn't look like the full version was featured on the Blu-Ray release either. KOKIA didn't write the song herself this time, so I have no idea about the odds of it appearing on a later KOKIA album. Sorry! Still keeping my eye out for news.

@mizumichan: Thank you! Did she release the song as a single? Can't exactly find her single album.

v The title of KOKIA's song for Harmonie is also Harmonie ( アルモニ), according to the ending credits.

Believe in the spirit sounds nice~ But I really want to listen the LONDON BEAT in her songs soon, if you know what I mean ;)

Maybe it's because the multiple names this song may have that it doesn't appear to be one of the top songs, but you really have to listen to "何もかもが星になって" (Nani mo kamo ga Hoshi ni Natte ~Everything becomes a star~) specially The VOICE 10th anniversary version! And... did you know that this song was created way before 2008? ;) KOKIA sang "Nani mo kamo ga Hoshi ni Natte" at the Sanctuary Live in 2003 ~

COLOR OF LIFE is amazing. I think I was at her 15th anniversary concert every time I listen. Yume no Tochu Concert Ver. is the best!!! Writing my own music from inspiration of KOKIA http://www.last.fm/music/Crayon+Tabibito/All+of+Crayon+Tabibito

v-- I third this. She's skimmed along the surface of experimental/art pop for a while now by infusing world and other influences into her music, but I feel like she should be a little more risky in her future endeavors. I love KOKIA's music and think she's a fantastic vocalist/songwriter, but I feel like she's capable of bringing out some left-field material.
