just gave loud city song a spin after not having listened to it in a while and I'm not sure why I don't do it more often, it's as excellent as it was when I first heard it. also I hope they put ekstasis back on spotify eventually, I miss it.

Many of you all seen her Issue Project Room performance? Only Julia and the piano, but it's my favourite thing by her except for maybe the goose bump inducing/hair raising concert with Stargaze Ensemble at the Barbican. Unfortunately, doesn't look like the latter was taped.

"Celebration is still my favorite release" - yeah that was actually a stellar release.. Celebration is still one of her best tracks, as is "Tragedy Finale". so far I am still liking "Loud City Song" maybe the least.

Finally she's releasing a version of Don't Make Me Over. I still wish she would release a solo piano version (and other songs), but this is great :)

@RusselChap every release Julia has done has seen some sort of radical shift in sound so hopefully the next will be equally different to any prior release!

I love her. She is becoming one of my favorite new musicians (new at least for me), her instrumentals are so amazing, I like how in Ekstasis she uses her voice like an instrument, also she have a pretty sweet voice. Loud City Song is just so amazing, every song is a diferent story, I like diversity in albums and Julia Holter is that!

to be honest, Loud City Song is, all around, a flawless album, which is impressive considering its scale. I've noticed that the music itself often takes on colors, textures and tones of urban bustle. like I can hear construction in the percussion, traffic in the string and horn sections, etc., not to mention all the city samples. not only that but the lyrics are rich and poetic, her use of metonymy is striking in "World," the way the hat becomes the mister becomes the city becomes the world, whom the protagonist can't escape. Holter is so on-point. her artistry recalls Scott Walker. been listening to LCS in cold weather and it is quite apt.

Eric, what I mean is that the crisper pro production better captures the textural details of all the extra instruments and sounds on LCS that weren't on her other albums. I love lo-fi, bedroom-recorded stuff, but LCS needed a pro recording job to do it justice. She's said as much herself. The production on Tragedy and Ekstasis suited those albums, but LCS needed something more, and it got it.

She has truly come into her own with Loud City Song. I love her other albums, but the broader, more detailed sound palette of the new one has given her ideas some room to really blossom.
