Biography

Joyce Bowden has released her first solo album under the name jolei. The CD is a collection of a dozen original tunes in rootsy, acoustic arrangements fleshed out by an organic ensemble including violin, harmonica, banjo, saxophone, piano and cornet. The album has a dreamy, quiet, hypnotic quality that luxuriates in Bowden’s intimate vocals, carving out a place somewhere among old folk and country, early Joni Mitchell and art song, and perhaps connecting the traditional to the avant-garde.”

~ Seth Rogovoy, Berkshires Week

——————————-

At seventeen, Joyce moved to New York City to record with the shamanic singer Gabrielle Roth. During her years in New York she collaborated with Joey Ramone; Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth (Tom Tom Club); Jerry Harrison; David Byrne; Iggy Pop; and Arthur Russell.

In the Summer of 1990 she toured with “Jerry Harrison and the Casual Gods” on a double bill with the Ramones. She and Joey Ramone became close friends, and she continued to work with him as a part of his side group, “The Resistance.”

Since moving to North Carolina, Joyce has continued to perform with Stephen Ineson and Lee Kirby as a member of Milagro Saints.

Jolei is her first solo release and was produced by Rick Lassiter. The songs of Jolei are explorations from dream life and quiet reflections on the nature of music in everyday experience: observation and the mirror of desire— inspired by Joyce’s work with the late cellist Arthur Russell.
