I grew up in a household with my ma who came to the US from the Caribbean as a young woman in the late 60's (she's a fan of Elvis Presley and the Golden Oldies as well as Hindi/Bollywood tunes in addition to Trinidadian music, Norah Jones and appreciates anyone who's "got pipes on 'em") and two much older siblings. My brother was a house/club DJ so that shit was bumping constantly and is embedded in my brain. My sister was into R&B like Tevin Campbell, Jodeci and whatnot yet also smooth jazz. I was all about solo chick singers, Disney tunes, Show Tunes, Carnival music, salsa, merengue and dance hits from all eras (especially disco and club remixes of pop hits) until the fifth grade when I got my hands on Tragic Kingdom and Razorblade Suitcase. Thus began my foray into alternative rock, interrupted only for a brief moment when I became Bad Boy records obsessed as a tween. I first heard ... …

It wasn't too long ago that I started seeing lots of folks on last.fm linking to pages on a site called "Rate Your Music," primarily for things like favorite album lists, but also in their profiles for no specific reason. Now, of course, for the longest time, I never followed or payed mind to these links at all. But as I started seeing more and more of them, I became embarrassingly intrigued as to why users on a music-oriented social networking site (of sorts) would be feverishly linking to another music-oriented social networking site. So, one day I pointed my Firefox to www.rateyourmusic.com and set up an account to see what it was all about.
After using many of the site's features, I can say with total conviction that I'm not at all sure what it is all about.
Rate Your Music ("RYM") appears to be a poorly conceived, unpleasant chimera of MySpace, last.fm and Discogs. It encourages the same sort of music discussion as last. …

11 Sep 2006, 03:03 by Victor2KI am a big fan of the one-hit wonders, those bands that had one only hit and nothing else. Or those that have a song that is more keen to identify them than the rest.
I can point that the 80s has the most quantity of OHWs than ever. Maybe the sound and the style created this range of bands known for one song.
Here I do a list divided into International and Brazilian OHW. I hope you all can like and point something

9 Apr 2006, 06:05 by NemesisVexWhat the hell is a guy who has just about every NUMBER GIRL recording doing with fucking Jordan Knight in his music library?
It was a matter of curiosity, really.
I was actually impressed with The Ego Has Landed, and for some reason, I thought Jordan Knight would be a good companion.
And it is, actually.
I despised New Kids on the Block when they were around because, well, they were no Duran Duran. At least Duran Duran wrote their own damn songs.
But Jordan Knight was released at the height of late '90s teen pop. A guy who actually paved the way for the likes of N'sync and 98 Degrees ended up opening for them on a 1999 tour.
The album itself is no pop music watershed -- nothing on the level of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill or Like a Prayer. But it is the work of a guy who at one time had it all and who just wants to eke out a living with his radio-friendly voice.
I mean, could you imagine Knight remodeling himself in the way Alanis Morissette went from teen star to feminist siren? Actually…
