About this album

Hot on the heels of their recent full-length, Almost Dead, comes “Courtney’s Basement,” the new single from Chicago’s Jonny Rumble. Its 2 new songs, the titular “Courtney’s Basement” and “To Foolishness,” are meant to serve as a sneak preview of the always inventive and newfangled band’s latest direction. “These were the first 2 tunes written for the next record, an EP that will be released in the Fall of 2009,” says singer Brian Webb. “People will be able to download them both free and enjoy them while we finish recording.”

In 2008 Webb, along with Jeremy Pryor (bass), Patrick O’Connor (guitar), and Seth Thomas (drums) had taken their varied frustrations and vented them into Almost Dead, their third full-length release. In blasting an eloquent and full-throttled critique of our misguided modern social and political state, the album served up the bitter rebellion and social conscience of early punk culture with a wickedly melodic edge. It was “a finger pointing, blame laying manifesto,” says Webb.

“Courtney’s Basement” foreshadows a new and layered direction for the band, both in terms of lyrical content and a more post-punk/power-pop musical approach. “We don’t feel like we’re just yelling at a wall anymore,” says Pryor. As to the difference in sound, “the new tunes involve less aggressive punk leanings, instead offering up more melodicism, more chords and syncopated rhythms in a dynamic hook-driven structure.”
