Biography

Johnny Neon is the pursuit of pop culture nightmares and vintage electronics. A future hybrid of art wave electro-sex deathpop.

The band began life as a studio only project called The Hot Lips, a creative outlet for then Cape Town based graphic designer Johnny Kotze. Between 2004 and 2006, Johnny (influenced by rock, pop and punk music) wrote, recorded and produced dozens of songs, using programmed beats and several analogue synths.

Picking out his 7 favorite songs, Johnny presented them in the form of “The Hot Lips” EP, a twenty five minute electro-rock aria, exploring a mix of synth-pop melodies and art-punk aesthetic. Johnny released the album independently, lovingly packaged in his own designs and hand-printed by One Minute Trolley Dash’s Righardt Kapp.

Moving to Johannesburg in October 2006, Johnny met prominent local dance-punk DJ and creator of the Sovereign Academy series of parties, Ben Rausch. Together, the two adopted the moniker Johnny Neon and set to work reinterpreting and transforming the songs of The Hot Lips into a live act.
