Birmingham, England

‘Body-snatching carnival punk’

The tuba blasts hot brassy bass deep into your stomach, and then your spine is snapped straight by the crack of the snare drum. The bass drum throbs and the ringleader’s electric guitar jangles your feet into involuntary spasms. Searing violin and cornet lines cut like hot knives as the trombone screams like a stampeding elephant, the timbales boxing your ears as the swirling ensemble gathers momentum. Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Weirdos have taken to the stage.

In a different world they would be playing at funerals in New Orleans, wedding parties in the Balkans or the musical agitators of a runaway circus. However, from their roots in Birmingham, England has grown a band that blends New Orleans brass and haunting east European anthems with samba, ska and reggae grooves all soaked in the petrol fire of punk, creating an original and infectious sound. This, combined with a breathtakingly danceable live show has seen the Sexy Weirdos gather a dedicated fan base in the Midlands, playing sold out shows at the O2 Academy 3, and The End at the Birmingham Ballroom, in addition to recording music videos to their tracks ‘Klezmer Prayer’ and ‘Morning After.’

The Mayans may have predicted the end of the world in 2012 but with a slot at Boomtown festival and the release of their debut album ‘Victory for the Monsters’ to look forward to; if you ever needed an excuse to start an end of the world party you may have found just the band to help you dance guiltlessly into the apocalypse.
