Johnny is the smoothest and most distinctive alto saxophonist of all time.

can't say where jeep comps from, but another version of why he had the rabbit nickname was due to his fondness of nibbling BLT sandwiches without the bacon.

they say hodges was called rabbit because when playing his face always remained expressionless...but, jeep i don't get... in any event...i will definitely hunt hodges' 1958 version of this beautiful ellington blues...

In answer to jazzy, I think the nickname jeep came up because of the way that Hodges played his solo's on swing compositions.

My favourite version of this is on the Ellington at Newport album, but really any one'll do, Jeep's playing is just so emotional and beautiful

Has anybody heard the story behind the nickname...Jeep? Just curious. Btw, if the story's too weird...never mind.

one of the finest blues Ellington wrote for the peerless Hodges. The later version from 1958 is however the best version. Seek it out.
