Johnny Dowd (born March 29, 1948 in Fort Worth, Texas) is an American alternative country musician from Ithaca, New York. Typical of his style are experimental, noisy breaks in his songs and strong gothic (in the sense of dark and gloomy) elements in the lyrics as well as in the music. There is also a strong undercurrent of black humor and the absurd in his work.

it's like a carnival left their barker behind in a small Southern town and he came across an accordion

Can we all just agree that the man is no longer, in any way at all, definitely not alt-country? Or Americana? Even Johnny doesn't think he is. The dude is being mis-sold.

I first heard this band at 123 Pleasant Street in Morgantown, WV-the music club I used to work at. I was working the door (checking ID's and collecting cash) when they started to play in the main room. I knew within 30 seconds that I wanted to be in there watching and learning instead of staring at a wall. That feeling occurred a mere handful of times in the 12 years (and 100's of bands I saw) I worked there. You will never see them play the same song the same way twice; Johnny works his songs over and over through time like a painter adding layers to a neverending canvas. One of the most memorable shows I've seen was in a bowling alley in Baltimore-the eerie red lighting combined with the haunting, yet angelic, singing of Kim Sherwood-Caso made for a fantastic show. I'm not one to label music or musicians, but if most of his stuff is not "country" enough for you, check out his first album. It has all the classic "country" themes and moods with Johnny's special blend of the macabre.

Forums User SATNACONA prefers the red-blooded true country music of Shania Twain. Not kidding about that.

I love country music but let's get one thing straight. This is not country and is not trying to be. Johnny Doud is brilliant though. Listen to the story behind the music. Who else can paint such a bleak picture in words. Awesome.

Seems ole JD is seriously underrated in these parts... Seriously, who cares whether it's 'country', as long as it's 'brilliant'? Especially the first three albums. Oops, I guess I'm not 'country' either. Ah well.

I fucking love Johnny Dowd. Gotta love a cowboy with a drum machine and a sense of what's evil.
