Rick Rubin is a genius in my opinion. He has the ability to strip back all the bullshit and leave the essential bones of a song and make it all the better for doing so. listen J Cash sing Witchita lineman for proof!

Rick Rubin really gave Johnny Cash a second legacy with the American Recordings. [2] So true. His classic stuff was a big part of my childhood, and then I rediscovered him as I got older and there was all this new material, and even the covers (like this amazing one) astound me every time.

Love both versions. The same song, but so different. Love them.

Very true Jamie. Especially this album is a league of its own. You can almost hear him taking his last breath. Also the themes in the songs on this album in general differ from very much from his earlier work. Very nice having him seen evolving over the decades until he died a few years ago.

See this is what cover versions are all about - this is completely different to Bruce's but both versions are awesome and I can't really choose between them. Rick Rubin really gave Johnny Cash a second legacy with the American Recordings.

Bruce has a version in the "Seeger Tour" on "Live in Dublin" DVD very great! This Johnny Cash version is very beautiful also!

Slow down, for The Rising you're right but on A Hundred Highways the titel is written without the brackets. Anyways, I like this version better

Bruce Springsteen did the original on his album The Rising. His version is more distorted and rocking. Personally, I think Johnny Cash's version fits the lyrics better.

Johnny Cash is a pimp. I've never heard this one, but I'm gonna have to download it now. I might as well just get this whole album.
