Sam stone came home to his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas
And the time that he served, had shattered all his nerves
And left a little shrapnel in his knee

Everyone who understands the meaning of his lyrics has covered his music, which is a great american history lesson.

Not so much age related. Back in the late-90s, he was treated for cancer of his neck. The radiation therapy affected his vocal cords, dropped his voice about an octave, and gave it a bit of "gravel".

I listened to this when I was very young, and the lyrics always painted a surreal picure of a father with a literal hole in his arm where he kept his money. Then I listened to it when I was 15 and had a dawning realisation that it was a horrendous depiction of a drug addled war vet struggling with life. For some reason I loved it even more after that.
