    top20albums

    20. Battlefield - Jordin Sparks
When I first got this album I was really lovin' it. However, in retrospect I kinda think that I loved it so much because there were no other good albums out at the time :/ Despite this, I still believe it was a strong effort from Jordin, who has definitely improved since her debut. I'm still stunned that the lead single and the album didn't do as well as many predicted!
Favourite Songs: Walking On Snow, No Parade, PlayBattlefield

    19. Memoirs of an imperfect Angel - Mariah Carey
Not my favourite album from Mariah, and it hasn't produced many hits and no number ones - which is usually expected from her. But still this is an album that I enjoy and will continue until she releases her next album!
Favourite Songs: PlayIt's A Wrap, PlayI Want To Know What Love Is, PlayStanding O

    18. 3 Words - Cheryl Cole
I probably dislike more of the songs on this album than I actually like. However, the songs that I do like are pretty good. Overall, I wasn't overly impressed with Cheryl's solo debut, but that's pretty much what I expected!
Favourite Songs: Happy Hour, Parachute, 3 Words

    17. Wordshaker - The Saturdays
I love The Saturdays! So much! And seeing Girls Aloud are taking a break, and Sugababes have gone shit, they're currently my favourite UK girl group. The album is a really good album, and a definite step up from the debut (which I also love!). It probably hasn't got as many plays as it should, but only because there were so many other great albums released around the same time!
Favourite Songs: Open Up, No One, Forever Is Over

    16. The Element Of Freedom - Alicia Keys
If this album was released earlier in the year, it most likely would have been a lot higher up in my list, because this album is actually amazing. However, because it was only released a few weeks ago it's being placed here as I haven't played it as much as others on the list.
Favourite Songs: Put It In A Love Song, PlayHow It Feels To Fly, PlayLove Is My Disease

    15. Colour Me Free! - Joss Stone
Everyone that knows me knows how much I love Joss Stone, and my charts on here show how big a fan I am. However, the promotion for this album was terrible. There was no hype at all, and through this I lost my desire for the album. The lead single was also disappointing to me, but after obtaining the album I understand that there aren't many radio-friendly tracks on it, which is ok. The album is not my favourite by Joss, and it still upsets me that it wasn't as successful as her previous three. But by all means this is still a fantastic album, which I seem to love more and more after each listen. Joss' vocals are on point and this feels extremely raw, which seems to be what Joss' is aiming for.
Favourite Songs: PlayCould Have Been You, Play4 and 20, Parallel Lines

    14. Play On - Carrie Underwood
This is another album that probably hasn't received as many plays as it should have, mainly because of the amount of albums that were released in the Autumn. However, it's another solid piece of work from Carrie and in my eyes she still remains as the best act ever to be produced from American Idol :)
Favourite Songs: PlayUnapologize, PlayPlay On, PlayCowboy Casanova

    13. Turn it Up - Pixie Lott
Pixie Lott is probably my favourite new act to come from the UK this year. Although the album isn't a masterpiece and doesn't even produce anything new that we haven't heard before, it's fun-filled pop goodness from start to end. A nice debut from Pixie, and I can't wait to hear more from her!
Favourite Songs: Here We Go Again, Jack, Boys And Girls

    12. THE E.N.D. (THE ENERGY NEVER DIES) - Black Eyed Peas
There's no denying that 2009 was a great year for the BEP's, who were top of the Billboard Hot 100 for over 6 months, and also obtained three no.1 singles in the UK! The album was also an worldwide success, and definitely one of my favourites of the year.
Favourite Songs: PlayMeet Me Halfway, PlayBoom Boom Pow, PlayParty All The Time

    11. The Fame - Lady GaGa
Although this was technically released in 2008, in the UK we received it in 2009, and 2009 was the year of Lady GaGa. Whether you're a fan of her crazy behaviour and bizarre performances or not, there's no denying that the GaGa does have talent, which is why she has gained so much success and praise over the last year.
Favourite Songs: PlayPoker Face, PlayStarstruck, PlayPaparazzi

    10. All I Ever Wanted - Kelly Clarkson
"Thank God!" was my response after hearing the album for the first time. I am just so thankful that Kelly has returned to the pop princess we all know and love. Whilst this album may not be as great as Breakaway was, it is definitely a step back into the right direction after the shite that was My December. I love this album, and she experiments so much on it that it's hard not to love it! Before this album was released I was not excited at all albout it, but now I cannot wait for Kelly's next offering!
Favourite Songs: PlayLong Shot, PlayDon't Let Me Stop You, PlayMy Life Would Suck Without You

    09. Rated R - Rihanna
This was probably not the comeback that anyone was expecting from Rihanna, and I have to say that I actually wasn't disappointed with the album. I thought I would be, especially considering that lead single Russian Roulette is completely different to Umbrella and not at all what I was expecting or even hoping for. But as an album, it is genius and outshines Good Girl Gone Bad with only one weak song: G4L.
Favourite Songs: PlayFire Bomb, PlayTe Amo, PlayCold Case Love

    08. Echo - Leona Lewis
Many have said that lead single Happy is the reason why Leona's sophomore album hasn't been AS successful as her first (granted, she is still currently the UK's biggest and best artist, full stop!). However, I don't think so, because looking at the other songs on the album I really don't see any song that could have come close to being another Bleeding Love, but Happy was the closest. The album still has plenty of time to sell though, and hopefully it will go on to greater success because - apart from the lead single - it is definitely a huge improvement from her debut. A great album from start to finish!
Favourite Songs: PlayCan't Breathe, You Don't Care, PlayAlive

    07. Love & War - Daniel Merriweather
After hearing that this guy - the amazing singer from Mark Ronson's Stop Me, was releasing an album - I thought that he was sure to have success worldwide. But while the sales figures for Daniel's debut haven't been groundbreaking, the album certainly is. Daniel's soulful voice is what captures me most, but this album is definitely one of the most under rated of the year!
Favourite Songs: Getting Out, PlayRed, Water And A Flame

    06. Fearless (Platinum Edition) - Taylor Swift
A re-release of Fearless with an additional 6 songs! Amazing new tracks from Taylor Swift was all I needed to finish 2009! I love Taylor soo much and this mini-release has provided us with one of Taylor's greatest song ever (Jump Then Fall!).
Favourite Songs: PlayJump Then Fall, PlayUntouchable, PlaySuperStar

    05. It's Not Me, It's You - Lily Allen
Lily Allen is often bashed in the media, and whilst she isn't the most perfect recording artist ever, at least she doesn't act like she is! On this album we are provided with more witty and sometimes crude lyrics from Lily. But all that should be put aside because most importantly Lily provides another album that is smart, unique and catchy as hell.
Favourite Songs: PlayNot Fair, Fuck You, PlayI Could Say

    04. Crazy Love - Michael Bublé
Where do I start with Michael Bublé?! I've always been a fan of his singles, and always respected him as an artist, but I didn't think of him as a performer until I saw his performance on X Factor. He gave me chills, and because I loved his lead single I knew I HAD to get the album! Fair enough, the majority of the songs on the album are covers, but that doesn't stop him making them his own, bringing his own charm, personality and emotion to each song. But most importantly, in my opinion he is probably the best male VOCALIST in the world at the moment.
Favourite Songs: At This Moment, Haven't Met You Yet, All I Do Is Dream Of You

    03. The Fame Monster - Lady GaGa
As I've already stated, 2009 was the year of Lady GaGa, and after releasing debut album The Fame she soon released Monster towards the end of the year. GaGa says herself that this album is actually her sophomore album, not a re-release or "deluxe" edition with bonus tracks. Personality I'm glad this is considered as an album in it's own right, because it definitely stands on it's own, and is far better than her debut! There are no fillers, just great song after great song, with 8 (out of a possible 8) being potential singles!
Favourite Songs: PlayTeeth, PlayBad Romance, PlayTelephone

    02. Battle Studies - John Mayer
My second favourite album of 2009 goes to John Mayer, who is by far my favourite male music artist! While his vocals aren't as great Michael Bublé or a few other male artists, his music is far superior. The album is a masterpiece and is on par with his previous album, Continuum. There's not much to say, except I love John Mayer and this album is amazing.
Favourite Songs: Half of my Heart, War of my Life, Heartbreak Warfare

    01. Fearless - Taylor Swift
Another album technically released in 2008, but a UK release of 2009 so it still counts! While 2009 is considered the year of GaGa, it's also been a pretty amazing year for Taylor Swift (excluding one disrespectful moment with one arrogant rapper!) who has had international success with both her singles and album. Despite not being a great fan of country music, Taylor has definitely been my favourite and most played artist of 2009! There's something about her music, her voice and her in general that captivates me and I cannot even state my love for the girl! The platinum edition (as I've already mentioned) was another great release for Taylor, but this album was by far my favourite album of the year and I doubt I could even find one fault with it!
Favourite Songs: PlayTell Me Why, PlayForever & Always, PlayYou Belong With Me

  • Top 10 Artists of the 00's

    31 Dec 2009, 15:03 by itravel

So the 00's wasn't generally a great decade for music. Yes, the music industry complains about the lack of CD sales, but honestly, that is due to the fugacious nature of music the past several years. The most popular tracks have more often than not, been about the immediate sales of singles. With iTunes coming to fruition in this decade, it saw the rise of those with little pocket money (and sometimes little music taste either) deciding what the 'top tracks' are. However, with the internet becoming a big source for more independent new music, this saw the rise of several great bands. Call this the 2000's, or the Naught'ies, or whatever you will, but hidden amongst most of the rubbish out there were some brilliant music groups that came into existence, and established themselves well in the past 10 years. Some of the following bands had EP's out previously, but this list is from album releases beginning in 2000. You may agree, or disagree, though more often than not I tend to disagree with most countdowns. However, for better or worse, I have decided to provide my own. Enjoy!

    10: Doves:

The definitive sound of “Epic” in the 00's, was the Doves. Their debut album Lost Souls arrived in April 2000 and the three-piece from Southern Manchester has only grown and developed other albums since. From the very first song, on the very first album, they show that they mean business with PlayFiresuite. PlayCatch The Sun also stands out on that album for me as well. The following albums have some stand out tracks as well, such as PlayCaught By The River, PlayWords, and The Last Broadcast from the album with the same name, Also PlayBlack And White Town from Some Cities is another particularly good one. They have had tracks featured on anything from the O.C. to Zombieland. While keeping their epic sound, they head into the next decade with their album Kingdom of Rust, which has been very well received.

    9: The Killers:

Okay, I admit, it took me a while to really get into the music from the Killers. They grew from their Las Vegas homeland to concert stages, and festivals around the world. Starting with Hot Fuss in 2004, they took the charts by storm with hits such as PlayMr. Brightside, All These Things That I've Done, and numerous others. Continuing with Sam's Town's PlayRead My Mind, and PlayWhen You Were Young, they began to branch out, and mature with their music styles. This was proven with the most Recent album Day and Age. With songs such as PlaySpaceman, PlayI Can't Stay, PlayThis Is Your Life and PlayA Dustland Fairytale, they showed they have the ability to change and adapt beyond just the party atmosphere of their earlier albums.

    8: Band of Horses:

With superb guitar work, and a certain happy, yet melancholic feel to their music, Band of Horses came out with their first album in the musically interesting year of 2006. PlayThe First Song (in name, and in order) from their debut album Everything All the Time, always gets me from the very first chord. Other notable songs on the album include PlayWeed Party, The Funeral, and PlayThe Great Salt Lake. Their second album Cease to Begin had their incredibly popular No One's Going to Love You (more than I do), which has been featured on many a film since. Other good songs alongside it are Is There a Ghost, and The General Specific. The quite upbeat Islands on the Coast is also a particularly interesting track.

    7: John Mayer:

If there's anybody on this top 10 who has re-invented themselves most, it would be John Mayer. From 01's Room for Squares, it had a definite rock/pop sound but with insightful lyrics, setting him apart from others. Songs such as PlayNo Such Thing, and PlayWhy Georgia had lots of radio airtime, promoting him to a wider audience. Seizing on this opportunity, he developed a more jazz/blues sound on his next album Heavier Things. The songs that jump out as being particularly interesting are PlayClarity, and PlayHome Life for their inventive sound. On his next album, Continuum, he went for a distinctly blues sound, as well as on his side projects. He had a specific socio-political message in PlayWaiting on the World to Change, and showed his growing guitar skills on PlayVultures. His new album, Battle Studies, from late 2009, with the first single Who Says, showed his continued mix of styles varying from Blues, to Country, as well as his continued appreciation of classic rock.

    6. The Mummers

The Most recent entry into this top 10 is the Mummers, from Brighton, England. Their multi instrumental, almost classical-pop styles have gained them recognition, and spots in some big name festivals in the UK in 2009. Their album, Tale to Tell, has some particularly great tracks such as March of the Dawn, Wonderland, and Lorca & The Orange Tree. Their group has had a fluctuating number of musicians, on a variety of instruments, with their lead singer Raissa. They have said to possibly be adding even more instruments down the line, so it will be very interesting to see how they establish themselves in the next decade.

    5: Broken Social Scene:

Canada's Broken Social Scene could be described as a superband with the presence of artists such as Feist being a part of the lineup. Whatever their status, they became an indie rock favourite in the early to mid 00's. Starting with the generally instrumental Feel Good Lost, they established their contribution to the music scene with pieces such as PlayAlive in 85. Thier next album, You Forgot it In People, added several new members to the band. It also showcased their new styles with such gems as PlayLooks Just Like the Sun, PlayAnthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl and numerous others. Their 2005 most popular self titled album had many great songs such as the complex 7/4 (Shoreline), the downtempo PlayOur Faces Split The Coast In Half, the harder rocking PlayFire Eye'd Boy, and the multi instrumental PlayHandjobs For The Holidays. They would most probably be best described as a mostly experimental band, as their albums are a strict departure to the majority of music of the past few years.

    4: Regina Spektor:

It is amazing how many stories, and moods that one woman with one piano can create. Regina Spektor has been a key individual in what has been dubbed the Anti Folk scene. Despite only finding massive acclaim in 2009, she has been creating music her entire life, with her first album 11:11, arriving in 2001 with high points on the album consisting of songs such as Braille. She released other albums, such as Music, which had tracks later repeated on forthcoming albums. On Soviet Kitch, she has great songs such as PlayCarbon Monoxide, and PlayUs, which has been featured as recently as 2009. On her next album, Begin to Hope, she released songs such as PlaySamson, and PlayFidelity which are still fan favourites, even after the release of her newest album in 2009. The most recent album of hers indeed, is Far, and has many splendid tracks such as The Calculation, Eet, and Folding Chair to name but a few. She occasionally uses stringed instruments, drums, as well as a guitar in her songs, showing she still has tricks up her sleeves going forward.

    3: Coldplay:

Some people love them, others hate them, but most generally, Coldplay are one of, if not the most popular new band of the 00's, and show the lasting power of groups such as U2. From their early 2000 release Parachutes, they had huge hits such as PlayYellow, and PlayTrouble, as well as other tracks used in films such as PlayDon't Panic, and PlaySparks. Their next album, A Rush of Blood to the Head revealed more upbeat songs, which were massive hits such as PlayGod Put A Smile Upon Your Face, PlayThe Scientist, PlayIn My Place, and PlayClocks, which had an amazing amount of radio play in several countries. 2005's X&Y continued their status of worldwide acclaim with songs such as PlayFix You, and PlaySpeed Of Sound. Their most recent 00's album was 08's Viva La Vida, which had them add a distinctly different sound in many ways from their previous albums with songs such asPlayViva La Vida, PlayViolet Hill, Play42, PlayLovers In Japan and many others. Their onstage charisma, and re-inventions have shown them to be worth their fame, and popularity, and seem to show many good releases yet to arrive from them.

    2: Fleet Foxes:

The band that is truly making harmony cool again. With a variety of instruments, and multiple harmonies in many of their songs, the Fleet Foxes have brought folk-alternative to a much wider audience. Some have described their sound as being centered in a forest, and others have described their music as having a distinctly nostalgic feeling. Their first full album, the self titled Fleet Foxes has many lovely tracks such as White Winter Hymnal, Ragged Wood, Quiet Houses, and He Doesn't Know Why to name but a few. Despite their most popular single Mykonos being from their earlier Sun Giant EP, their full album got the attention of many in 2008. Their inventiveness with a variety of instruments, has promoted them to a world stage, with many concerts and festival bookings throughout the last year. They are currently working on their new album which has many, myself included, eagerly awaiting their next step musically.

    1: The Shins:

Possibly not the best known band of the last decade, but is probably the most influential Indie band of the 00's. 2001's Oh Inverted World, had such tracks such as Caring Is Creepy, and PlayNew Slang making it onto the Garden State soundtrack a few years later, but has several other standout tracks such as Know Your Onion!, The Celibate Life, and PlayGirl Inform Me. The style with the bass driven riffs, and higher chords is quite prevalent in their earlier work especially, though their poetic, and insightful lyrics continue well into their recent work. Their second album Chutes Too Narrow has a distinctly different sound, with a more urgent sound to it. It starts with the more rocky sounding PlayKissing the Lipless, and ends with the quietly melodic PlayThose to Come, with other great tracks such as PlaySo Says I, and PlaySaint Simon in between. 2007's Wincing the Night Away rewarded them gigantic popularity, with singles such as Australia, Phantom Limb, and PlaySea Legs, but has several other gems such as PlayTurn On Me, Black Wave, PlaySplit Needles, and PlayGirl Sailor. In 2008, the band underwent some changes as they left Sub-Pop, going to the lead singer James Mercer's own record label, and two longtime members of the band left. However, the remnants still toured in 2009, and a new album is still being talked about, so we shall see what they surprise the music world with in the years to come.

    Honourable Mentions:

    Frou Frou:

Despite Imogen Heap's 90's release i Megaphone (an anagram of her name I might add) excluding herself from the top 10, her side project Frou Frou would definitely be a big album in the 00's. With the huge hit PlayLet Go making it onto many a movie, Frou Frou's album Details signaled a difference to some of Imogen's previous work. Combined with Frou Frou's other member Guy Sigsworth, they created an album full of other great songs such as PlayBreathe In, PlayHear Me Out, and PlayIt's Good To Be In Love. While the bands success was short lived, it still became an amazing highlight of the 00's.

    The Swell Season:

The intricate, and full of feeling sound from Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová’s band The Swell Season, grew to Prominence from the film Once. Their self titled debut album has the track Falling Slowly, which was an oscar winner from the film. Other particularly potent songs on the Once soundtrack include Gold, and Fallen from the Sky. The newest release from them is Strict Joy, with gems including The Rain, and PlayLow Rising. The multi-instrumental, harmonic, even folk sound from them have earned them a special place in many people’s hearts and music collections.

    Gorillaz:

Damon Alborn's many side projects during the 00's showed some successes during Blur's absense, none would be quite as popular, nor as genre bending as the Gorillaz. 2000's self titled album had a huge hit with PlayClint Eastwood, but has many other great tracks such as PlayRe-Hash, PlayTomorrow Comes Today, PlayRock the House, and Play19-2000, which also had a popular remix. However, that release paled in comparison with 2005's Demon Days, with the huge hit Feel Good Inc. Their other great successes on the album included PlayKids With Guns, El Manana, and PlayDirty Harry. Possibly their most different song of that time was from the Charity Album Help: A Day in the Life, with their song PlayHong Kong, including a very sad sounding piano, with some interesting possibly chinese guitar work. Their distinct sound is still regarded highly in all of the genres they covered.

Most, or all of these mentioned bands may, or may not release more albums. But their effect, and influence in the decade that was the 00's will surely be remembered for years.

    Thanks for Reading!
  • 2009 in the rear view

    31 Dec 2009, 14:15 by fm014

    Hello readers,

I hope you're having some great last days of 2009 and that you'll enjoy New Year's Eve.
I recently took some time to look at all my playlists which always make me smile when I think of how much great music I got to discover this year.
So here's my thank to the hundreds of artists and producers who love to make music and who made my days brighter.

And now here should be a picture of the special records I used to listen to last year.
(I'm a bit surprised by the choice the generator made though)

Which brings me to the more official scrobbling stats of the last 12 months - here I go...

My most played artists of 2009:

01> Madonna (over 750 plays) - The queen of pop easily reigns surpreme regarding my playlists. Not only her singles but also lots of remixes became personal highlights whenever I needed to cheer up.

02> John Mayer (about 725 plays) - He may not be a prince of pop, but I consider him a king when it comes to playing guitar or singing lyrical songs.

03> Traveling Wilburys (about 650 plays) - I'm surprised these talented musicians were that much on heavy rotation last year. Of course it's great because their songs feel like timeless classics.

04> The Killers (over 640 plays) - Apart from strange Christmas songs this band has become one of my favorites when I think about 2009. Their last album, their live DVD and their crazy videos are proof of their greatness (to my mind).

05> U2 (over 625 plays) - Another legendary band that makes me enjoying music so much - simply magnificent. Not only did they start another world tour with innovative settings, they had also a brilliant gig in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

06> Thirteen Senses (over 475 plays) - If my CD player stats would count this band would easily be among the top 4 artists. Their two albums are so fabulous. I really hope to hear from them in 2010 as there might be a third record on the way.

07> Roxette (over 460 plays) - Since I can think of enjoying pop music the songs of this duo were with me all these years. So they are still a big part of my life.

08> Bear McCreary (over 380 plays) - Another surprise. I already wrote about his great score music for the TV show "Battlestar Galactica" and that I love to listen to it while I'm reading books or comic books. What is there more to say... I probably had lots of things to read last year. ^^

09> Farin Urlaub (over 350 plays) - A German artist... finally :-P I have to admit that before 2009 I wasn't that much into his songs. So it was like discovering a new field of music when I was listening to his songs.

10> Nickelback (over 330 plays) - Mixing rock and pop elements on their last album this band made their way into my top ten of 2009.

So that was my top ten... but I'd also like to mention some more artists which made music in 2009 more fun: Kylie Minogue, Sarah McLachlan, The Fray, Bob Dylan, Lady GaGa...

My most played tracks of 2009:

01> Celebration by Madonna (over 65 plays) - Now is there a better way to end the year than this party song? :-P Big thanks also to Paul Oakenfold who produced this gem of 2009.

02> Who Says by John Mayer (over 55 plays) - That would be a good chill out (after party) track. This song made the wait for his latest album really hard. ^^

03> PlayFesseln by Psypirinha (over 37 plays) - One of my all time favorites when I think of this extraordinary German band. It's simple, direct and harsh.

04> PlayAnimal by Thirteen Senses (about 36 plays) - Another newly found favorite track you can find on the second album by this band. I really like the guitar part after the first verse. ^^

05> The Devil's Been Busy by Traveling Wilburys (about 35 plays) - I'm surprised this is my most played track by this band, but it's good.

06> PlayAll The Love In Your Hands by Thirteen Senses (about 34 plays) - Hm, this one's also an absolute gem of their second album. The song rocks and has also calm parts.

07> Inside Out by Traveling Wilburys (about 33 plays) - Great band, great albums, great songs. This is just my second most often played song by them. ^^

08> PlayD.d.a.d. by Psypirinha (about 32 plays) - Love it or hate it. At first this song felt just noisy to me, but after a while I really could relate to the lyrics. ^^

09> Heading for the Light by Traveling Wilburys (about 31 plays) - A third TW-song among my top ten of 2009. Now who have thought that ^^

10> PlayShake It by Metro Station (about 30 plays) - And I'm closing with a surprise. I knew that I heard this song quite often, but I didn't expect it to show up here. But it also fits to start and to end the top ten with a party track. ^^

And that's it for my first whole year of scrobbling.
