Biography

JIVE GRAVE began as a side band project of composer & performance artist Geo Wyeth (aka Novice Theory) in preparation for a residency at Ars Nova Theater (NYC) in 2009. With roots in experimental new music, jazz, and traditional story songs, Geo Wyeth has created a unique & theatrical performance style with an incredible crew of all star Brooklyn musicians, including Keith Parker (formerly of Afuche), Tina Richerson (The Tiptons) & Mike Irwin (The Woes). The music is both familiar & alienating, alternating between different states of raw unamplified vocal & instrumental sounds, to divorced & ambient synthetic musical statements. Wyeth has shared the stage with such diverse and random performers as Larkin Grimm, Justin Bond, The Shondes, & Grace Jones (he was featured on the BBC show “Later with Jools Holland in 2008). JIVE GRAVE embodies commitment to raw, honest, human performances with its chaotic & contained synth/horn arrangements, west-african influenced guitar playing, hard thrashing balkan style rhythms, & poetic lyrical articulation. Witnessing them perform is being led into a strange & familiar territory of myth, introspection, and adventure.

Wyeth grew up in New York City & Montclair, New Jersey & graduated from Yale in 2007 with a degree in American Studies. He is an out FTM transguy and much of his initial support came from the queer community. He has studied music with Michael Veal, Kathryn Alexander, Marc Pakman, & Barry Harris.
