23 - the songs for “bleed am/self-titled” were very direct in presentation. partly due to our limited budget and time. partly it was a creative decision to make the most concise and simple tunes we could simplifying them seemed like an academic challenge, like a puzzle: find the best and shortest route to present the fullest and most effective song. this creative direction was in response to the material on our clarity album, there we let things be looser and move atmospheric. 23 was trying to use both approaches in the same song. this is the best example of where we were coming from working on the songs for futures. we let the song go where we thought it wanted to, trying to give it enough dynamics to feel complete. we decided to let the songs breathe and have space to explore themes. it is ok to have the vocal entrance a few minutes into the song if you still get the feeling you are being led somewhere interesting. —jim
