Biography

James Richard Steinman (born November 1, 1948 in New York City, New York) (more commonly known as Jim Steinman) is an American rock and musical theater composer. He is notable for having written most of Meat Loaf’s hit songs, in addition to hits for many other musical artists. His three biggest musical successes are an album Bat Out Of Hell (1977), sung by Meat Loaf, Total Eclipse Of The Heart (1983), sung by Bonnie Tyler, and a German musical Tanz der Vampire (1998). He also formed the female group Pandora’s Box for the album Original Sin. Several of the songs from this album have appeared on later Meat Loaf albums.

I like both versions. Don't see much reason to compare them since they're pretty different. The thing that's fun about Kogures covers is hearing him singing girls rock hits in japenese. His cover of Cherry Bomb by the Runaways is also quite brilliant. :)

Yeah, Rory has a great voice, he's awesome in Surf's Up too, and in Total Eclipse of the Heart. Rory Dodd and Holly Sherwood are the best singers Steinman has ever worked with. And the the Demon Kogure cover can't even compare with the Holly Sherwood original. Though it's fun to hear Steinman's music in Japanese.

If you're a fan of Jims work (and heavy metal) you should check out the covers of Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young and Holding Out For A Hero by japanese artist Demon Kogure. They're pretty epic. :)

The Rock n Roll Dreams vocals were actually sung by Rory Dodd on the Bad For Good album. He does sound remarkably similar to Jim though. I only found this out a little while ago. I thought it was Jim's voice.

Great composer, producer - and I like his voice, too. His version of Rock´n Roll Dreams come through is awesome.

Grade A songwriter. As a singer? Not so much. Meat Loaf and Steinman, an unbeatable pair.
