About this album

Jethro Tull’s first LP-length epic is a masterpiece in the annals of progressive rock, and one of the few works of its kind that still holds up decades later. Mixing hard rock and English folk music with classical influences, set to stream-of-consciousness lyrics so dense with imagery that one might spend weeks pondering their meaning — assuming one feels the need to do so — the group created a dazzling tour de force, at once playful, profound, and challenging, without overwhelming the listener. The original LP was the best-sounding, best-engineered record Tull had ever released, easily capturing the shifting dynamics between the soft all-acoustic passages and the electric rock crescendos surrounding them. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Yeah, I wouldn't put much stock in Christgau's opinions about... well, anything really, but especially progressive rock/heavy metal.

it's not that it has few listeners, it's just has only 2 songs in it that are 20+ minute long, so that's why it appear to be so underplayed

Like Zappa's Lumpy Gravy, this album is difficult to get to the top of the charts.

Hard to believe it's nearly 44 minutes long. It goes by so fast. Someone before me said "not a dull moment". Yeah, that's it.

christgau is full of shit. he's never written a song in his life, and he gives george harrison c's and b's, like he's some sort of "head master / teacher /professor" of all music. fuck off robert, you aren't the 'dean' of anything. end of rant.

Robert Christgau's review: Ian Anderson is the type of guy who'll tell you on one album that a whole side is one theme and then tell you on the next that the whole album is one song. The usual shit--rock (getting heavier), folk (getting feyer), classical (getting schlockier), flute (getting better because it has no choice), words. C-
