St. Albans, England

Jenium are an English Modern Indie Rock band made up of singer and guitarist Samuel Townsend, lyricist and drummer Eddie Watson, singer-songwriter and guitarist Colin Frances, and bassist Jack Freeman from St. Albans, England.

Their music is largely influenced by guitar music of the 2000s including Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, The Strokes, and Kings of Leon. The band also have a strong interest in dance rock music from artists such as Foals, classic rock and pop acts such as Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, and post-hardcore acts including Thrice.

The name “Jenium” was reported to have been chosen following a drunken practise session somewhere in 2006, where it was slurred in the place of ‘Genius’ by bass player Jack Freeman.

Their debut EP, Beneath The Surface EP, was recorded throughout 2006 at a local studio. While this was sadly never released, all the tracks featured are now freely available via sources such as Last.FM, MySpace, and Facebook.

May 2008 saw the band signing to Open Window Records with their début album scheduled for recording in August, in anticipation for a November release. However, a suitable producer was not found in time and the band started an extended pre-production process with engineer Daniel Crocker. Many demos were recorded during this time and by the end of 2008 an album’s worth of material was on the cards.

Jenium’s self-titled debut album was finally recorded in April 2009 with ex-Abbey Road Engineer Bryan Smith (Spandau Ballet, Chesney Hawkes). All songs went on to be mixed by Smith, with the exception of ‘Close To Home’, being taken care of by Umberto Cimini and Daniel Crocker.
