King Porter Stomp (2:53)

Cover of Piano Rolls

From Piano Rolls and 96 other releases

Jelly Roll composed this as a tribute to a Floridian pianist named Porter King. Fletcher Henderson took this tune and turned it into a swing classic, which was one of the first hits that Benny Goodman took from the Henderson book. Porter King has a fine memorial.

This gives a good sense of how good a pianist old Jelly Roll was. Now check out some of his Red Hot Peppers' tracks which show how good he also was as one of the pioneers of jazz band arranging.
