“3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds” is a song by the band Jefferson Airplane. It was written by Marty Balin after he recalled “just looking in the newspaper at the sports section and seeing ‘three-fifths of a mile’, and somewhere else on the page, ‘ten seconds’. And I combined the two in a sudden flash.” The song appeared on the album Surrealistic Pillow.

The song also contains a reference to ; “Real clean, real fine nicotine. Sometimes the price is 65 dollars, prices like that make a grown man holler; ‘specially when it’s sold by a kid who’s only 15.”

3/5 of a mile in ten seconds is 216 mph (347.6 kph).

Imagine the genius it takes to come up with this while reading the sports page one morning. Marty was very exceptional at this time in his life.

Maybe, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Are You Experienced and some others are very important too. But, yes, it's a great album.

Just a great band arriving at the perfect time. If this is from the original it definitely needs to be remastered. Sorry Gen-exers and later generations but if you didn't come of age in the 60s you'll never get what they were about. But if you're serious about the Airplane you will have to do extensive research most of which has been erased from history.

Never been much for psychedelic stuff, but this cooks, and I'd like to see what can go 216 miles per hour (that isn't a plane) - their version of the car of the future?
