    27 Dec 2009, 23:53 by Loupitour

Here is a little top ten of records that came out in 2009 and hit the fan with an attitude.
The items aren't sorted from the good to the best because they're all cool and deserve full attention. I write them as they come to my mind.

    - Jazz Liberatorz - Fruit of the Past

Those guys just rock at doing some of the finest jazzy hip-hop beats. Great productions. Great featurings. Great Hip-hop.

    www.myspace.com/jazzlib

    - Harmonic 313 - WHEN MACHINES EXCEED HUMAN INTELLIGENCE

The cool as hell electronica dubstep 8-bit tainted glitch-hop from Mark Pritchard who already rocked *a lot* with Harmonic 33. This must be one of the heaviest release of this year.
All the tracks are pure dope in a very nice 8-bit sci-fi universe. That's it. Futuristic AND vintage. How cool.

    www.myspace.com/officialmarkpritchard

    - Zenzile - Pawn Shop

Now this is a very cool release from the french band Zenzile. Their last release was venturing deep into pop rock sounds but stayed definitely high quality from the beginning to the end. This one is a little bit softer but we can say the same about the quality : the blends of rock and dub music with the voices of Jamika and David K. Alderman are just awesome.

    www.zenzile.com

    - Bassnectar - Cozza Frenzy

Wow. I can feel my wall moving. This one is really serious. From the deepest glitch-hop to the heaviest dubstep, everything here blows the shit out of the hell.
Lorin Ashton, the guy behind this project just knows how to rock the place and I can't wait to see this live some day.

    www.myspace.com/bassnectar

    - Gui Boratto - Take My Breath Away

Mr. Boratto doesn't seem to know how to make bad music. His sounds are just perfect and this release doesn't say anything else. Everything is produced with a great talent and the tracks are totally epic with a special mention for No Turning Back who could almost bring me a tear or two.
I saw him this summer in Astropolis Festival and this was fucking HUGE. The set was so deep it was almost sexual. Truly awesome.

    www.myspace.com/guiboratto

    - Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

That cover is a little bit mind-fucking but the album is really cool. Those guys have a really special and weird sound but managed to collect a really large audience of listeners since the tracks are very attractive.
They are ranked #7 in Last.fm 2009 top charts between Green Day and Beyoncé ! wow !

    www.myspace.com/animalcollective

    - Moderat - Moderat

Modeselektor + Apparat = Moderat. What a nice equation.
The producers already worked together on some tracks and remix but for the first time they released a full album followed by a full scale tour.
I really dig what they do on both sides and really digged what they do together. The heavy basses from Modeselektor and the fine rhythms from Apparat gave birth to a very new and special sound who needs to be listened with attention.

    www.myspace.com/moderat

    - Two Fingers - Two Fingers

This project is the collaboration of Amon Tobin and Joe Chapman. This is dark, this is loud, this is dope and this is what you would except from a project featuring Amon Tobin. There are a lot of featuring with MCs like Sway, Ms. Jade or Ce'Cile whose voices flow perfectly over the instrumentals and the whole album is astonishingly effective.
Oh and by the way, listen to the remix of PlayThat Girl by Spor, it's just devastating.

    www.myspace.com/2wofingers

    - Kanka - Sub.mersion

Dub ! Loud bass ! flying skanks ! delay lay lay lay lay \o/
We frenchies can only be proud of Kanka, our national Massive-tunes Maker. That album is the continuity of the two precedent releases : Four-to-the-floor bass drums, precise skanks, reverbish snares and very nice featuring with the voices of Ranking Joe, Biga or MC Oliva.
A must-have for all dub / stepper lovers.

    www.kankadub.com

    - Squarepusher - Solo Electric Bass 1

As a bassist and a big fan of Squarepusher, I had to listen to this.
And I wasn't disappointed. Tom Jenkinson is one hell of a bassist. He can get some flummoxing riffs out of his instruments as well as he can produce crazy tracks from his machines.
The real cool thing with this one is that it's *only* bass. 40 minutes of riffs, slaps and solos in a very special Jenkinson way : frenetic & jazzy. Yeah that owns.

    www.squarepusher.net

That's it. I know I'm forgetting a lot of cool music but you've got the idea. This was a very good musical year and I think we will have at least the same in 2010.

    Keep listening !

Albums of the year - 2009
Two ratings, one for the album, one for the album compared to average of artist's previous albums. Mostly just for me to come back to next year to have a look.

    LPs

    1) dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion, 10/10 - 8.5/10
Most poppy of their albums but it’s still fucking amazing.
    2) Muse- The Resistance, 9/10 – 7.5/10
    Exogenesis <3
    3) Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue 8.5/10 - 8/10
Not quite up there with Dirt and EPs, but it’s growing on me.
    4) Amorphis – Skyforger, 8/10 – 8/10
    5) AFI - Crash Love, 7.5/10 - 8/10
One of my fav AFI albums. I thought they were full-on going emo after Decemberunderground, but luckily they decided to write a decent rock record
    6) Placebo- Battle For The Sun 7/10 - 6/10
    6) Porcupine Tree - The Incident, 7/10 - 6/10
    7) The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die, 7/10 - 7/10
    9) N.A.S.A. - The Spirit of Apollo, 7/10
Good bunch of collaborations with decent artists. It works.
    10) K'naan – Troubadour, 7/10 - 6/10
Much shorter and not as good as The Dusty Foot Philosopher, but has some good songs (my favs – Wavin Flag, Fire In Firetown, I Come Prepared, Fatima)

    EPs.

    1) Puscifer- "C" Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE), 10/10 - 10/10. (The new 3 tracks are pretty much the best Puscifer tracks)
    2) Massive Attack - Splitting The Atom, 8/10 - 8/10 (3 really good songs and1 really boring one- Bulletproof Love)
    3) RJD2 - Tin Foil Hat, 6.5/10 - 6/10 (fav track - Thine Planetarium)
    4) Modest Mouse - No One's First, And You're Next, 6/10 – 4/10 (it is a collection of B-sdies hence why it’s not that good)

    Pretty Decent LPs

Katatonia - Night Is The New Day (need to listen to this more)
    Imogen Heap - Ellipse
    k-os - Yes!
    Norah Jones - The Fall
Weezer – Ratitude (usual weezer immaturity)
    Owl City - Ocean Eyes
Billy Talent - Billy Talent III (solid catchy album as usual)
Chali 2na - Fish Outta Water
Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings (need to listen to more)
Dub Pistols - Rum & Coke
Eminem – Relapse (never gonna match SS or MM Lps but not bad)
    Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
    Zero 7 - Yeah Ghost
    Ziggy Marley - Family Time
Jazz Liberatorz – Fruits of the Past (random good find, jazzy hip-hop)
Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day (pretty good for mainstream hip-hop. Whole album is pretty good)
    Metric– Fantasies
The Sounds - Crossing The Rubicon
Tech N9ne – Sickology 101 (pretty angry lyrics but he can rhyme pretty damn well)
Awol One & Factor – Owl Hours
The Crystal Method – Divided By Night

Ones that should have been much better

    311 - Uplifter
    Air - Love 2
Lacuna Coil – Shallow Life (really forgettable)
Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures (eh.. guys, it doesn’t work especially well. Let’s get back to Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and retirement)
Street Sweeper Social Club - Street Sweeper Social Club (a lot of it blends into one, maybe I’m just pissed it’s not RATM)
Elysian Fields –The Afterlife (maybe I need to listen to it more, but not especially liking this one)
Dizze Rascal - Tongue N' Cheek (only a few ok songs, the others are puke-inducing - Holiday, Leisure, etc)

    The utter anal crap

    Chris Cornell – Scream

Pretty good year for music. The top 10, especially top 3 made it a pretty excellent year.

Abstract Rude, Prevail & Moka Only - Code Name: Scorpion

This album is fun and light and these three dudes all have great voices. They have a good sense of humor and unique flows. It's a good album to listen to when you are in a laid-back kind of mood.

Afro Classics - The Classic EP

Okay technically this not an album it's an EP but it still makes the list. And you know why? Because people are zzzzzzz-in on this EP for real! This shit is high quality and needs to be heard by the world.

Asheru & Blue Black - Soon Come

Such great jazzy beats. This album is great for creating a good vibe for a lil get together and it's dope music to dance to. Love these guys.

    C-Rayz Walz - Ravipops

C-Rayz Walz deserves sooooo much more respect than he gets. This dude is an amazing lyricist and has such a chill delivery. He has a lot of good offerings but I think Ravipops is his best.

    CMA - All Over

Two of my favorite members of the Living Legends (The Grouch & Luckyiam) make for a dope lil duo. This album cover's the spectrum with sad, happy, heartfelt, real and funny songs. I love albums that offer a diverse trackset.

    Eminem - Infinite

It still shocks me how many Eminem fan's don't know this album exists. It is better than all his other albums by like freakin light years dude. This is thee album that turned me onto underground hip hop forever. If you have never heard this you better figure out a way to get your hands on it because it will change your whole rating system for what good hip hop should sound like.

Felt - Felt Vol. 2: A Tribute to Lisa Bonet

Alright if you haven't jumped on the Felt bandwagon yet then you need to because Slug & Murs are two of the realest in the game. And together they equal pure dopeness. I know a lot of people prefer Felt Vol. 1: A Tribute to Christina Ricci (which is also great) but I like the production on Volume 2 a little better. The beats for "Morris Day", "Marvin Gaye" give me chills! In a good way of course. And the lyrics in "The Biggest Lie" will hit you at your core.

    Grieves - Irreversible

Ahhh this dude has talent...more people need to recognize. Granted he has some songs that make you go hmmmm. But most of his songs make you go wowwwww...beats & lyrics are both on point and sometimes downright amazing.

The Grouch - Crusader For Justice

Oh The Grouch...one of my favorite rappers of all time. So insightful and really seems to understand the essence of life itself. It's hard to pick out just one of his albums but for me Crusader for Justice just barely edges out the rest. Such a great positve message and good production to match.

    Jazz Liberatorz - Clin d'oeil

If you want some dope jazz-hop then you have found the right group. You cannot help but bob your head when you hear this offering. This is the kind of album you listen to and remember exactly why you love hip hop as much as you do.

Luckyiam - Most likely to succeed

Lucky has a bunch of dope albums but I'm recommending this one cuz I think it was highly slept on. You wanna hear a heartfelt album then this is the one for you...Dude puts himself out there for real and is not afraid to expose all his faults and the mistakes he's made along the way. This album is easy to relate to because it comes from the heart.

    Marco Polo - Port Authority

Holy beats!...Marco Polo is a master at his craft and this album has great guest appearences from Masta Ace to Large Professor to O.C. to Buckshot...told you they were great :-)

MF Grimm - The Hunt for the Gingerbread Man

If you like concept albums this is a great one to check out. All the songs have to do with the Gingerbread man but instead of being a light frou-frou album this shit comes raw. And the shit is hilarious.

    One Be Lo - S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Beginning to end, no skipped tracks, essential hip hop to bless your ears. Homeboy talks about REAL shit and has a surplus of creativity. This album does not disappoint.

    Pep Love - Ascension

Pep Love is one intelligent ass man. You listen to one of his songs and you feel like you have just been schooled on some real shit. Plus he comes from a very spiritual standpoint so most of his songs are pretty uplifting and beautiful.

Poor Righteous Teachers - New World Order

Classic old school style. PRT is political, high energy, creative hip hop. These beats just make you wanna move for real. The thing I like about PRT is that even though they are political they do it in an exciting way...it's a little different than someone like Dead Prez who just force the shit down your throat. Not saying I don't like Dead Prez but it's just two different approaches to the same subject matter.

    Sandpeople - Honest Racket

This is one of those albums you wanna listen to over and over just cuz the lyrics are so fuckin cool and creative and you catch a different line each time which makes it that much more dope.

Senim Silla - The Name The Motto The Outcome

This album is a fuckin gem that has been overlooked time and time again. I have to say I probably never would have checked it out if it weren't for my homie who kept tellin me over and over that I needed to check it out and he was right. Has one of my favorite tracks ever on it "Brothers Killed Malcolm" but the whole damn album is legit.

Slug - Slug is My Hero Volume 1

Slug you hot mother fucker you! haha just playin but he is one talented ass guy. If you like Atmosphere you will love this album. Its a sampling of more of Slugs crazy, neurotic, sometimes sad, sometimes funny take on the adventures of his life.

Zion I & The Grouch - Heroes In The City of Dope

This album will make you go :-O...so ridiculously dope, I cannot even explain. Its something better experienced for yourself.

Welp I hope you liked my list and maybe even found a few new albums to check out. If you didn't like it then fuck you.....

No just playin! I am an equal opportunity listener, everyone has the right to their own taste...

    happy listening =)

So..if you ask me why there's no Nas - it's because I haven't heard Untitled and I don't think to do it.There's no Atmosphere,Vast Aire or Vordul Mega cause I'm not a fan of that kind of Hip Hop.I won't add The Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind cause I don't think that this is a Hip Hop album(but is actually still very good). The order of the top 10 could be different, they're all great. When I'm rating the albums I'm not listening only to the lyrics and beats but estimating which artist has its own original sound cause there are like 20 albums with the nearly the same production this year.
And I won't add Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die(The O.G. Edition) cause it's just not album from this year. Otherwise it should be #1.Same thing with Freddie Foxxx - Crazy Like a Foxxx.By the same reason may be I shouldn't add Siah & Yeshua DapoED and Jean Grae(cause Jeanius is recorded in 2004) but I added them anyway..

    So, watcha think?

How awesome is the Jazz Liberatorz album? Jazz + hip-hop = fucking win. I love how they talk about their influences in between songs, too.

    So awesome. :-)
