Jase Connection - Beathedz Vol. 01

With a move to work with indie heavyweights Obese Records the former Nuffsaid and Nubreed artist Jase has released a compilation showcasing new and older artists over his array of diverse beats. His background in breaks means Jase’s beats are not always straight up hip hop in sound, wavering with an airy feel to them at time yet he can turn on the bangin’ drums when needed.

This is no more evident than with the opener ‘All Out’ with great rhythm as long-stayers Raph and BVA (of Mnemonic Ascent) flex while Lazy Grey’s ‘Give Them An Inch’ gets a re-working that improves on the original cut. Many names are recognisable with some interesting styles coming in from Hau of Koolism and 13th Son as well as Reason, Muph and Pegz. Newcomers have their fair share of the limelight however with names such as Equills, The Optimen, Robby Balboa, Patto and Javs. Since The Jase Connection is such a varied compilation whether one enjoys the release will depend on their take on the individual artists with some working better than others.

MC Javs is one of many highlights with the melodic beat he spits over with his smooth delivery and the vocal sampled hook with introductions the topic at hand on ‘Know the Name’. Relatively fresh on the scene Queenslanders The Optimen and asphalt-throated Robby Balboa bring heat for ‘Chin Music’ “sought after like a Jessica Alba sex tape” while Muph & Pegz further show they work well as a duo going back and forth trading rhymes.
