Like a latter day Robin Hood in dark glasses, founding member Blake Jape had, by mid- 2002, formed a group of merry men with similar attitudes to making rock music. The making of the first album, ‘Modern Holiday’ (2003) was completely chaotic. Lead vocalist Woody filled in on drums and producer Michael Alonso juggled the long cast of extra folk playing various instruments that came through the door.
It wasn’t until half way through the recording of their second album, ‘Breakfast with Jape Squad ‘(2004) in 2003 that a regular line-up began to emerge. Francois (drums) arrived back in town just in time to give the album its title and drum on the last four songs. Spot (bass) had woken on a couch weeks earlier to find he was in a band.
Jape Squad have always believed in a collaborative song-writing process. Blake remains the band’s key songwriter, but prefers to present his work as unfinished business for the band to play with. Spot and keyboardist John are also regular contributors, with the final draft always being completed collectively.
From ‘Head over Heels’ (2005) to the forth-coming release, ‘Super Friday’, Jape Squad’s song writing has matured. Complex arrangements and more subtle instrumentation have emerged. Lyrics have turned to a more specific focus on social and political issues.
