Japanese Sleepers were a Nottingham/Sheffield-based genre shifting quintet, founded in early 2010 by Andrew Hirst and Alexander Christopher Hale. They played one show as a two-piece before expanding the line-up to include Neal Heppleston (bass), Gemma Ferguson (glockenspiel, drums), and Stephen Wragg (violin, cowbell).

Around the time of their early shows they released a 4 song demo - Demons and Demos - to the internet. This demo gained the interest of record label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation who released their first EP, Little Victories, in early 2011. The EP was recorded and produced by Screaming Maldini frontman, Nick Cox.

In December 2010 the band teamed up with long-time friend and part-time lover Robert George Saull (of Andy’s other band, The Purgatory Players) to release a special Christmas EP, We are Small, but Together we are Great. For more information on this release see Japanese Sleepers & Robert George Saull.

In March 2011, just over a year after their first gig as a two piece, the band went on indefinite hiatus.
