Houston, United States

Jandek is a musician, presumably from Houston, Texas. Since 1978, he has self-released 77 albums of unusual, often emotionally dissolute and songs.

Jandek plays a very strange and frequently atonal form of and music, often using an open and unconventional chord structure. Jandek’s music is unique, but his lyrics closely mirror the and traditions of Eastern Texas.

Barely a handful of people claim to have contacted Jandek, whose steadfastness in anonymity is legendary. Without any conventional attempts at promotion, he releases albums through his own record label Corwood Industries, which is addressed at a Houston post office box. Fans can write to Corwood for a typewritten catalogue and order Jandek’s albums, usually at inexpensive prices. Jandek’s work has been available on vinyl and on compact discs. Many of his albums feature pictures of the same young man (seen above) at various ages; in light of Jandek’s live performances it is almost entirely certain that the person featured on the album covers is Jandek himself.

Jandek’s first album, Ready for the House (1978), was first accredited to a band called “The Units” but it was obviously a solo work. Jandek presumably plays acoustic guitar and has recorded much of his work apparently unaccompanied (assuming that the person singing is also the person playing guitar). However many other songs feature female vocals and/or different male vocalists.

Jandek has been playing live for a while now, so "Jandek is a hoax" is a somewhat dated theory.

I have a friend who looks just like Jandek does on the cover of Six and Six. He says Jandek is a hoax.

I think, as a Jandek neophyte you're *supposed* to have Interstellar Discussion, Follow Your Footsteps (it rules), the one that has 'Message to the Clerk' (don't remember the title), Modern Dances (it also rules), You Walk Alone, The Living End (I'm not a fan but still) and The Beginning. Also the infamous Put My Dream on This Planet, if you're interested in *phases*. Khartoum maybe.

Right, so I'm getting into Jandek properly now. Dude's released a lot though. I've heard Chair Beside a Window and Ready for the House, both of which I'm still figuring out, but it's definitely impressive. Have Blue Corpse and Glasgow Monday ready as well. What else should I get? To sort of get familiar with different phases and stuff (don't really know how much the music changes). Full band stuff would be fun. Piano stuff, all sorts of things. Does someone maybe want to guide me?

@Xhi - I agree. Ghost Passing and Song of Morgan were both interesting (and quite relaxing to listen to imo), but I hope Jandek is done with the very long piano themed albums. Maybe the next release is a 6 CD spoken word album?

puh, "ghost passing" is quite a challenge. often sounds like there's an airplane in the distance, slowly falling down to earth with jandek on board, playing some notes on his old wooden piano. sounds interesting.
