John Symon Asher “Jack” Bruce (born May 14, 1943) is a Scottish musician; a multi-instumentalist, composer, singer. He is most well known as a very influential electric bassist, especially when he was a member of seminal rock band Cream.

In the early 60s, Bruce played double bass with Graham Bond in the Graham Bond Organisation, which played a mixture of jazz, blues, and R&B. It was at this time that he met drummer Ginger Baker. After stints with John Mayall and Manfred Mann, he formed Cream with Baker and guitarist Eric Clapton. Cream had numerous hits during its existence, most of them written by Bruce with lyricist Pete Brown.

In the years since Cream’s breakup in 1968, Bruce has released a number of solo albums, mostly in a more experimental vein, and worked with a wide variety of musicians in many genres. The list includes Robin Trower, Tony Williams, John McLaughlin, Carla Bley, Allan Holdsworth, Ringo Starr and Frank Zappa. He was also a member of the band West, Bruce And Laing.

More recently he had an album under the band name BBM (Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Gary Moore) called Around the Next Dream

Vol. 2 of the Cream album "Wheels of Fire" is a great way to hear the best baseline and drumming in all rock or jazz history.

Love Jack's music. Seen him live in Glasgow in March and hope to make the Edinburgh show next month! Great songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and all round musician. Also his voice is a gift from the heavens especially on albums such as 'Harmony Row'. It's shocking the recognition he does not receive!

Great songwriter, great singer, and his versatility (a virtue) may have worked against him commercially. One minute he could play jazz and fusion with the likes of Carla Bley and Tony Williams, the next he was rocking out with Leslie West to say nothing of the songs he wrote and sang with Cream. What remains constant is the high quality of his work in any "genre."

Unsung hero indeed! 'Bird Alone' should be up there IMO. 'Make Love, Pt.2' is another good one from his 80s album 'Automatic'.

My Hero. I found out about Cream about a year ago, and been in love ever since. I listen to their whole discography almost daily... then, I discovered Jack. As a bass player, I always admired him... as a singer, I've always admired him. But when I first heard Songs for a Tailor, especially Theme From an Imaginary Western, I knew he had a special place in my heart. I love this man.
