JJ Alberhasky has been writing songs since his years as a teenager growing up in high school. His tastes and work have ranged from country to roots rock to pop, but he has always been a songwriter first and foremost.
His first project, The Sidehillwinders, was a traditional duo in which he worked with Joi Jaasma, whose husband Ty Hopkins occasionally filled in as well. The Sidehillwinders played mostly in the Northeast, with shows in Maine, Connecticut, and Vermont in support of their record "Tumblehome" (spring '01) until moving and career shifts forced the group's activity to be suspended indefinitely.
Since then, JJ has been playing on his own throughout the Midwest from his home base of Iowa City. He works from an apartment downtown where he records in his bedroom. His most recent recording "Only the Bony", released in the spring of '04, was recorded entirely in his room and his closet. Thematically, "Only the Bony" is a far more personal recording than Tumblehome. The record offers much of itself as an autobiographical document and gives, at times direct and at other times oblique perspectives into Alberhasky's life.
Currently, JJ is one third of The Sleeping Planes, working with Martin Carpenter of Columbia, MO (The Little Achievers, The Lost Toys) and Cory Hutchinson-Ruess. They are presently tracking a record, the release date of which is uncertain.
