In December 1996, Maria Azevedo and Evan Sornstein of electro/industrial group Battery created a cassette only release titled frozen. The concept was to write a suite of music based on various female winter myths and fairy tales. The tape contained 6 songs: the white witch, proserpina, sif, yuki-onna, koturine, and the snow queen. The cassette was presented to fellow Battery member Shawn Brice, who wanted to work on it, so the three planned to re-record the songs and put them out on CD. COP International offered an opportunity to release the project on their new sister label, THE FEDERATION.
