Austin, United States (2013 – present)

There have been at least two groups named Institute. A rock band fronted by Gavin Rossdale, now split-up, and a currently active post-punk band from Austin, Texas.

(1). Formed in Austin in March 2013, Institute includes members of Wiccans, Glue, Blotter, Recide and more. Before they were even a proper band, singer Moses Brown had a couple of raw post-punk songs sitting on a four-track at his house. Once the lineup solidified, the band touched up one of those songs (“Dead Sea”) for a demo, then quickly wrote enough material to flesh out that demo (re-released on Deranged), a seven-inch (on Katorga Works), and in October 2014, their debut EP for Sacred Bones. Their debut full-length album, Catharsis, is set to be released by Sacred Bones in June 2015.

(2). Institute was an alternative rock band formed in 2004, featuring Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale and members of Rival Schools and Helmet. The band’s only album, Distort Yourself, was released September 13, 2005.

As Gavin Rossdale put it, the last couple of years have passed fairly quickly…astonishingly so, he reveals with a small laugh. “Well,” he begins, “I got married, I lost a band, and I gained a band.” This might be a tiny bit of oversimplification on Gavin’s part.

Best known for being the singer and songwriter for the multimillion-selling British rock band Bush, in recent years, he’s been the subject of the international tabloids as part of a famous marriage to Gwen Stefani of the band No Doubt

grunge fans; chill the Texas one is active and far better than the old one. I love that the term hipster is still thrown around as an insult in 2015. #gg

Fun show. A couple of the guys in the band are real assholes, but what do you expect from a bunch of hipsters rehashing music from thirty years ago. Still, fun show.

Certainly not listening to anything Bush/Rossdale related. Fuck that nonsense. Texas is the reason.

Saw the Post-punk Institute earlier this month in a kitchen somewhere in downtown Richmond, VA. Their performance was not one to be forgotten. So much energy and their frontman was very fun to watch fall over the place and get thrown around lol
