eternal_absence : you can also check angL, it kicks ass too, even though I still prefer After and Eremita. but songs like Scarab or Elevator are masterpieces !

I think he stated that the next would be more conventionnal metal. he already had written some material for that during the seelenbrechen sessions.

After listening to Das Seelenbrechen for months and months, I really fuckin love it. It's different than his other stuff, but I'm interested to hear where he will be taking us during the next album.

Das Seelenbrechen holds up to Ihsahns other releases. Sure its no Adversary, After or Eremita but it shows that he is expanding his sound and staying interesting at the same time. The album isn't as structured as the last 4 albums, but I'm excited to hear how that sound will be perfected with the next album.

I liked a lot of angL when I got familiar with Ihsahn's solo work. I have always considered The Adversary and angL as a pair because they resemble each others. Same thing with After and Eremita.

Best place to start? Prometheus is fantastic, as TheNightsnail recommended. However, in my opinion the first solo album "The Adversary" is a better place to start as its a perfect balance between Emperor and what he would go on to do with the other solo releases. Prometheus is fantastic but uses the low end of that 7 string guitar much more than any other of his releases, so I'm not sure if its the best introduction.

  • phatride

One of the best things that is happening to modern metal music.

    November 2013
  • TheNightsnail

Emperor's Prometheus which is practically Ihsahn's solo album. After it continue to his later solo works. Also, if you're interested in experimentation listen Thou Shalt Suffer's Somnium which is a mainly instrumental release.

New album is incredible, really experimental at parts too. Was apprehensive he was releasing another album so soon, but I think I might like this new one more than Eremita even already.

"I really don't think it's Opeth's new direction, but instead, something Mikael just really wanted to do." It's strange, because i said they changed their style, and i don't agree with myself today haha. The new album is going to be heavier according to Mikael, so it'll surely be a great one. Anyway, i loved Heritage, i found it refreshing and full of ideas and i wouldn't be angry if he decides to make another album in that style. But, well, let's talk about Ihsahn, he deserves it (!)

New album is pretty obscure. Das Seelenbrechen had my curiosity, but now it got my attention.

  • Darkfall_

""I still think it's Leprous' "Coal" obscure brother." I was thinking that as well. Especially since Ihsahn was on Contaminate Me and they play together anyway. Both have a similar atmosphere as well. " You forgot that Tobias Ørnes Andersen from Leprous also had played drums on "Das Seelenbrechen" as well as on "Eremita"

Gotta say, this album really surprised me. But, I absolutely love it so far. It's different, it's weird, and it's got some interesting atmosphere.
