Slovakia (1999 – present)

Since arriving on the Slovak music scene in 1999 Hrdza have secured a relatively strong position locally while enjoying a good name beyond the folk scene from which they originally hailed. They have performed many concerts both at home and abroad and have earned some twenty awards from a variety of competitions and festivals, including the most eminent Czech awards at Porta festival in Usti nad Labem in 2003 and Zahrada Festival in 2004, both famous three-level competitions. They also took part in the finals of top Slovak pop music competitions such as the U. S. Steel Talent Night in 2004 and the Coca-Cola PopStar in 2005. In 2002 Hrdza released their well-received debut album “Muzička” which was clearly based on the group’s Slovak roots. The latest release, “Pod Bozimi Oknami” (Under God’s Windows), on the Universal Music label, has been lauded by fans and critics alike and tracks from the album have already enjoyed top places in the charts of several commercial Slovak radio stations. Hrdza’s repertoire is dominated by original compositions written by band leader Slavomir Gibarti, whose music forges a strong bond with the traditional culture of his homeland. The interpretations of the songs combine Slovak folk roots, rock and pop elements, complex rhythms and resourceful arrangements and show both eastern and western influences. The impressive and distinctive voice of the lead singer Veronika Rabadova adds yet another dimension to the group’s songs that deal mostly with relationships and lives of people living in the countryside.
