I completely adore The Lord of the Rings soundtracks, and especially The Complete Recordings. I think it's the best film music ever released, in terms of scope, creativity, attention to detail and overall complexity, matched only by Williams' work on Star Wars. Seriously, this is some epic shit. [2]

"Wilderness" is an average track, but it has a very good beginning with the best arrangement of Smaug's theme in my opinion. I got shivers hearing this while the title "Desolation of Smaug" was appearing on the screen.

I wonder why Wilderland has got so many plays, whereas the true classics on DOS (The Forest River and Feast of Starlight, not to mention all the Smaug cues) are overlooked somewhat. Do people have no taste?

@ Desolation of Smaug: What happened to the choirs singing actual lyrics? Think of all the Quenya, Sindarin, Adûnaic, Old English, Khuzdul, Black Speech, etc. on the LOTR soundtracks... I do understand that Tolkien never created a language for Laketown, or for the dragon, but given that the filmmakers are retrofitting "The Hobbit" into the epic LOTR world, they could have at least honored the fact that Smaug is a "firedrake from the north" with some Quenya chanting like they did with the Balrog in "The Fellowship of the Ring"...

One of my favourite things about the LotR soundtracks is how each major realm has a different sound... the playfulness of the theme from the Shire, the heroic Gondor theme, the violins of Rohan, the booming beats of Isengard... and yet there is a similar quality in all of them so that you always feel as if you really are listening to the sounds of Middle Earth. :') God bless Shore and Jackson.

The Desolation of Smaug is rather disappointing. Yes, there're some remarkable moments, like scenes with Smaug, locations of Esgaroth and Erebor, character of Bard and adventures of Gandalf. But everything else is shitty, unfortunately. Nonetheless, soundtrack is awesome!

In my opinion, The Desolation of Smaug OST is pretty awesome. For me the best OST of the year without any doubt. Of course, it'll take me some time to make a complete opinion but now I'm literally addicted to Thrice Welcome, just can't stop listening to it. Great job!

DoS' The Hunters and Smaug are incredible. The use of eastern instrumentation is magnificent!

    December 2013
  • DanielosVK

Well, DoS could be much better. However it's still a good piece of music with great action cues and some beautiful melodies (like the House of Durin theme at the end of "Girion, Lord of Dale").
