Horde is the one-man project of Jason Sherlock, famous for being one of the first to combine the musical styles of with Christian lyrics, spawning the genre of “unblack metal” or “white metal”.

In 1994, the German record company Nuclear Blast signed what they claim was an anonymous man who was thought for a long time to be from Norway but was actually Australian and operated under the alias “Horde”. Horde recorded one album called Hellig Usvart. This was the first black metal-style album released by a major label in the extreme Christian metal scene.

Horde has been traditionally referred to as Anonymous over the many years, but since then, was revealed to be Jayson Sherlock, the ex-Mortification and ex-Paramaecium drummer, who has since been active in InExordium. Jayson received a number of death threats for his performance in Horde from Black Metal fans distraught at his lyrics.

I read that he said if he was doing it again he would've made the lyrics more personal.. but, yeah, as they stand they're unfortunate to say the least. And I agree about modern evangelism. Catholic mysticism, Eastern Orthodoxy and gnosticism would provide far more interesting material. I never baulk at listening to David Tibet and Current 93 or enjoying older Christian art, for example.

I mean, all my life I've been thinking that Christianity could be (culturally, not spiritually/religiously) interesting to non-Christians, and yet practising Christians seem to go out of their way to make it as uninteresting as possible - particularly any of the modern evangelical type movements. At least good old Catholicism has splendorous Cathedrals and pious ceremonies to make up for the plethora of misery and suffering they've stubbornly inflicted upon the world for the last two millennia :p

I'm with Un_Autre_Con, but the lyrics to me suggest it's just preaching. This is why have more respect for Antestor, since the lyrics seem much more heartfelt. That said, I'd really like some Christians to make some bm whose lyrical content focuses on biblical tales, particularly the more morbid or spectacular ones. There's so much material there that they could work with (ever read revelations?), but it all seems to be either childish anti-Satanism/evangelism (like this) or pleas to god/jesus for support with personal issues (like Antestor).

The music itself sounds well constructed enough to me. its pretty good raw black metal.

If this is a sincere, deeply-felt expression of a personal belief, with all the inner-conflicts and turmoil that honest art entails then fine. My favourite author is Dostoevsky, who did exactly that and I don't mind listening to Burzum and Graveland even if my personal views are the opposite of theirs. If, however, this is an just a vehicle for evangelising to 'satanic' (whatever that means) metalheads, then this is nothing more than a well excecuted imitation and I'll pass it by, thanks. I don't necessarily care if he is Christian but I don't like being preached at, especially if it is through the appropriation of an art form I love.
