About this album

© Universal Music S.A. (1998) Released: 10 Sep 1998 12 tracks (50:23)
The songs were written by Hole, some with the help of Billy Corgan; Courtney Love penned all of the lyrics. The studio work took almost a year and a half, due to Love’s rising movie career, fruitless recording attempts in New Orleans and Nashville in 1997, Corgan’s involvement in songwriting and the actual album sessions, between Los Angeles, New York City, London and Miami. According to Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson, Love was allegedly “not caring about” playing her instrument on the record, focusing only on singing and songwriting; Billy Corgan played bass on PlayHit So Hard; and Patty Schemel didn’t play on the album, though she is credited as a Hole member on the sleeve.

The album received three nominations at the 41st Grammy Awards: Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

It's nearly impossible to listen to this song and not start dancing like a maniac. Or maybe it's just me... :p

Can't say I like it more than Live Through This but will say I like it just as much. They are two completely different albums but both are incredible and Hole remains in my top 3 favorite artists.

chill, i think what kind of kills some songs in here is de production, sounds sometimes to polished, it's kind of annoying at times, but this album has some of the best Hole songs like Malibu, Petals, amazing record but it's no live through this.

How is "it might as well hurt" lazy and " where the fuck were you when my lights went out" not? I love POTI, but even Courtney said she was trying too hard on that record, and even went as far as to call it 'lame'. There is nothing 'awkward' about "Use Once" - my guess is you just dont really appreciate pop Courtney. I love the poduction on this record, and I think Beinhorn did a great job. We obviously listen for different things on a Courtney record. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

You can't say anything is "absolutely" anything because it's personal opinion. I have a hard time believing you don't know that. And yeah, the lyrics on POTI are juvenile in some cases (especially "Teenage Whore") but only to highlight a certain frame of mind. I don't think she's playing it straight on "Teenage Whore". And the lyrics of "Garbadge Man" are very deep, unless of course you're just looking at everything from the most obvious perspective. If you are, I wouldn't be surprised why you'd say that. If anything, their most mature album lyrically was their second one, so again, you don't know what you're talking about. "Use Once" is a perfect example of what's wrong with this album. The chorus is spectacular and beautiful, but the lyrics are 1) phrased extremely awkwardly, 2) lazy ("It might as well it might as well hurt" doesn't mean anything in the context it's used), 3) repetitive from early stuff (lazy) and 4) BAD, just bad. And don't get me started on the production values.

Im sorry, I just dont hear how the lyrics are embarassing and I definately do not think this album was lazy. This is probably their most carefully constructed album, the band purposely took their time to create something they felt was brilliant. I think Courtney wrote some incredible songs here - the lyrics to songs like "Awful" "Boys" "Reasons" "Use Once" and "Northern Star" are prefectly executed. I think the lyrics on Pretty on the Inside are far more embarassing and juvenile than anything on Celebrity Skin. This is absolutely Hole's masterpiece.

Always loved this album, has a certain quality about it that makes it stand out from many of the albums of the period. I personally think that this is Hole's masterpiece, unfortunately, that is not the view of most :-(

The lyrics are embarrassing compared to their early stuff. Tons of awkward phrasing, easy rhymes and she reuses metaphors and other lyrics from her early albums. There's no accounting for taste, but these lyrics strike me as painfully, painfully lazy. And the music is similarly unimaginative.

I don't understand the dislike for this album...ten years after I first heard it, I'm still impressed. Soft(er) or not, these are some incredibly well-written songs.

I have to admit I prefer the vinyl tracklisting. The CD has Boys On The Radio way too late in the running order.
