Hailing from the concrete shrouded island of Portsmouth, Hold Fast’s music was never likely to be sunny summer pop, but even in a city with a thriving underground music scene the harsh beauty of their music stands apart. Where their peers are influenced by a trendy tick-list of artists like The Velvet Underground, Hold Fast come with a whiff of Siouxsie & The Banshees and just a hint of early Depeche Mode. At home they’ve already made their name, playing some of the city’s major venues and being elected the best band in the city in 2008 by the local press, they’re even set to headline the city’s New Theatre Royal. Their affinity with local fans hasn’t gone unnoticed either, with the band being selected to support the likes of White Denim and The Joy Formidable in Southampton and even invited up to London to share the stage with Polly Scattergood at the Luminaire. All the while the band offer up their self labelled double A side single Lie/Victoria, inviting the audience to pay whatever they deem the songs to be worth.

Hold Fast mix post-punk with electro, building on the granite hard foundations of Toby Wheeler’s frenetic drumming and the pulsing rhythms of Ben Hogan’s bass guitar. With that launching pad, Adam Macauley fires of salvo after salvo of blistering guitar, layered with feedback and fuzz and all delivered with consummate panache. All this comes together to form the perfect framework for Roberta Collins’ vocals. She may not fill the stage with her tiny frame, but when her mouth opens a massive, warm, all-encompassing sound pours forth.
