Biography
Angers, France (1994 – present)
Hint is the name of three distinct projects:
1) Hint (UK): Ninja Tune sound
2) Hint (France): Noise band
3) HINT (Taiwan): Electronic funk, classical, hip-hop, lounge
1) Hint (UK)
Hint (Jonathan James, Sussex, UK) is an Excellent Jazzy DJ with down tempo beats and grooves contrasted against future-dance floor bombs.
His first singles and the debut album, Portakabin Fever, was released on by Bristol-based independent record label Hombré Recordings, in association with Ninja Tune.
The music is at the more chilled-out, downtempo end of the Ninja Tune roster. Several tracks feature looped acoustic guitar and keyboard sounds and his style has been termed “ruralbeat”. When Hint recently played live, he was joined on stage by Bonobo and Minotaur Shock, the trio performing under the banner “The Hint Touring Band”. Both artists also contributed remixes to Hint’s track “Count Your Blessings”.
Hint has been a good friend of Tru Thoughts for many years. He was first found on Tru Thoughts (whilst signed to the superb Ninja Tune) on the Shapes One Compilation with a track called
Back to the Wig.
Expect Hint’s ever evolving style to keep you guessing and wanting more. His first solo release on Tru Thoughts, The Tremmuh EP is a vastly different, more dancefloor orientated style to his last album.
November 2007 saw the release of Hint’s second EP on Tru Thoughts, At the Dance. This foot stomping 12” shows a mix of dub-step, hip hop and big bass lines whilst retaining his classic down tempo style.
