“Richmond, roughly three hours by car to Baltimore’s southeast, has somehow escaped being disastrously labeled a “hot” burg for bands despite producing some of the more fun/weird combos of heavy, arty, and punky of the past 20 years. There’s Gwar and its many tentacles (see also: Kepone), metal from the likes of Burn the Priest/Lamb of God, and the hair-parting transcendence of anything featuring guitarist/superhero Pen Rollings, from Honor Role to Breadwinner to Butterglove to Ladyfinger to Loincloth. And this musical ocean is the crucible from which the mighty Hex Machine has sprung. Drummer Chris Gallo has kept time in Farquhar and some iterations of Labradford’s Mark Nelson’s dub/beat excursion Pan American. Guitarist Scott Hudgins delivered a spectral glaze to such haunted windswept rock in Tulsa Drone and an underheard late-’80s/early-’90s mind-spelunking outfit called Brainflowr. Bassist Chris Compton put a wicked low-end into the wicked tube-pulling buzz of Bay of Pigs. And with vocalist/guitarist Trevor Thomas, Hex Machine practically nails the sort of ribcage-bruising rock that AmRep/Touch and Go all but patented back in ye proverbial day.”
